Life and Work with CasSandra Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to CasSandra Williams.

CasSandra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have also wanted to own a business but was going back and forth in what I wanted to do business in. After being in the Navy and working in corporate, I definitely wanted a change and have always wanted to start something of my own but had no clue how to do so. I started to do quite a bit of research in regards to starting a business and networking with other entrepreneurs regarding the pros and cons. I have always had a passion of helping people and having them realize the best of themselves and not always doing what everyone in society is doing, was important in what I wanted to do as an entrepreneur.
In November 2018, I launched my boutique (BlackLux) which caters to individuals whose creative style is one of comfort and quality while having a casual vibe–The boutique BlackLux, name was chosen because I wanted to celebrate the unique creative style individuals have which represents who they are. I want to build a brand that not only uplifts people but to also let them know societal rules really does not matter, and fashion is a way of expressing one’s creativity. As an individual, who has been more of a tomboy and has a love of comfort, I believe this is a way I get to share that part of my story with people.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to entrepreneurship has not been easy where I have been faced with many ups and downs. From building up a following for the brand to being a parent juggling a business and a family has not been easy. Where many hours and lack of sleep has made me realize that being a business owner is not easy but is something I am happy doing because it makes me fill fulfilled. It has taught me to be patient, create a feasible work schedule which allows me to spend time with my kids as well as handling business operations. The advice I would give women who want to start a business is to write down the things you want to do, how much will it cost to use in creating a budget to include marketing, the pros and cons and is this a true passion or more about money. Whatever you do, one must have a passion for it not just about the money to be happy and successful.

Please tell us about BlackLux.
What I’m most proud of for my boutique is the reflection of not only my personality but the fashion style I love the most. I’m introverted as I can be, but it allows me to tap into my creative element and convey my personal side not many get to see. My brand, BlackLux allows me to express myself in ways that I am often not able to do verbally. My clothing apparel allows me to live in my purpose of making people happy in loving who they are and to celebrate their creative style. We specialize in casual comfortable apparel of t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, joggers, accessories and home décor for everyone (men, women, and kids) which illuminate the creative comfort that individuals want to have. We also getting ready to create our own sneakers which represent the brand as well. I am most proud of my tenacity to not give up during times of building my brand to the legacy I am creating for my family. As well as showing other women you can achieve anything you set your mind to when you stay focus and not give up on what your passion is. It is great feeling seeing your customers shine their light in just being them and accepting they are different and love who they are. Our brand is about being you and loving your style and providing excellent services to our customers to have them come back over and over. I swear by the products we provide and love the direction we are going in. Plus, the name celebrates the light we all have.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders? Everyone will not accept your role and leadership ability to know the ins and outs of a business. As female leaders, there are doubts that you do not know what you are doing and why should one listen to you. The biggest is being treated as equal and not being afraid to speak up. One must understand the industry their are wanting to go into, whose at the top of the industry and how to become a game changer. This barrier impacts woman in gaining vital knowledge to grow their business and have longevity. Do not let others stop you and hold you back from what you want to achieve. I always believe I can do anything a man can and be successful at regardless of what anyone else may say.
