Today we’d like to introduce you to Davina Calloway.
Davina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I’ve always had a “Go get it” attitude and I never wanted to stand still. I wasn’t the kid who would just kick rocks outside. I was the kid who rinsed them off, polished them up and sold them for ten cents each so that I can buy some big ol’ chocolate chip cookies from Mary’s Deli in Upstate N.Y. Creativity was my best friend and together, we created some of the greatest memories. I was an entrepreneur at heart. I turned all my hobbies into a hustle because even at the age of six I understood that in order to have what you most desire, you’ve got to put in the work. And I knew those cookies weren’t going to last forever. I’ve had my share of ups and downs and discouraging times. I’ve had my moments of wanting to give up. Faced depression and still have bouts of anxiety. Working for other people’s dreams started to take a toll on me and I knew I had to JUMP. Three Little Teepees became my landing spot when I took the leap of faith. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into but what I did know was that I had ambition and the passion to create something amazing. I wanted to be “One of the Firsts” and now, I am the CEO of Atlanta’s first teepee sleepover rental, Three Little Teepees.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
If you’re traveling on the road to success, it’s never smooth. You hit sharp turns, run over potholes and sometimes land in a ditch. A wise man once told me, “ When you’re on that road to success, things are going to get in the way. Things are going to try to stop you from reaching your destination. But it’s up to you on if you want to continue on that road or turn around. You’re going to run out of gas and you may need to take a detour but always remember why you started in the first place.” Thanks, Pops. I always get asked, “What are you most passionate about?” I discovered that I have passion in all that I do. I believe that’s how you become the greatest version of yourself. Put in what you want out and you will succeed. The task may not be what you want to do but if it must be done, do it and be passionate about it. Stomping your feet is just going to weaken the ground beneath your opportunity and cause it to fall through. So, if I had to choose just one thing, I’m passionate about my happiness. Therefore, I will do all that it takes for me to achieve that. As a young woman starting her own business, I had to learn to not put all my focus on the competition across the street but to focus on the reflection in the mirror. We get so caught up trying to impress or out-do the other person that we fail to challenge ourselves causing us not see our own capabilities. Regardless of your position, always remain HUMBLE. At the end of the day, all whom we surround ourselves with, contribute to our success. Rather it’s a listening ear or constructive criticism. Acknowledge it. Embrace it. Remember your purpose, we all have at least one.
Please tell us about Three Little Teepees.
Three Little Teepees is Atlanta’s first teepee sleepover rental. We deliver, setup and pickup the next day. Our beautifully handmade teepees and decor is what every party/event needs to stand out from the ordinary. We pride ourselves in being hands-on in our community as well as volunteering our time and donating goods to cities that have suffered natural disasters. We also donate to our local food pantries and women’s shelters in Atlanta. We believe that If we learn to work with and not against one another, so much more can be done and we can help thousands of people.
Special thanks to my husband, Victor Calloway Jr. and my three little stars, you all inspire me and push me to be the greatest version of myself each and every day. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without y’all. I love you to the moon and back to the universe and beyond.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
We have the power to create our own opportunities. All it takes is one to change your life. The first impression is everything but what also matters is how you decide to carry yourself through it all. We’re constantly running around trying to get things done and wear so many hats… and scarves that we often forget who we are. We forget to relax and just enjoy the moment for what it is. Don’t be afraid to just stop and breathe. Remain professional at all times and carry yourself as the beautiful Queen you are and OWN IT!
I have to give a shout out to my mom. We may agree to disagree on many things but one thing I know for sure is that you showed me what strength truly is. You taught me to never give up and to always stand firm for what I believe in. You always knew I was going to be great at whatever I put my mind to. Thank you for believing in me. I love you.
