Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Reeves.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always had a love for photography but I found my passion for newborn and children’s photography after my son was born. At the time, I was an amateur momographer with a beginners camera and I wanted to be so much more for myself and my clients. I decided to take the leap and invest in my career with all the equipment I would need and I started taking online photography and editing classes, practicing every day and all the while still being at home with my kids. I started to see my business and myself growing with the hard work I was putting in to being a better photographer. I also wouldn’t be where I am today in my business without the help and sacrifice of my husband who managed the construction of my studio and helped me in so many other ways during this journey in my new career.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It isn’t easy juggling mom duties and owning your own business. As a mom, your on the job around the clock and as a small business owner you are too. But it is all worth it to be truly doing something you love. It is never too late to find your passion in life. Starting out in the photography world, I was also worried that there were too many other photographers. But I have found that an industry is never too saturated for you to succeed in. If God put a gift in you, then there is plenty of room for you.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jessica Reeves Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Working in a very populated industry, I knew I needed something to set myself apart. I invested in a home studio and unique props for my clients. My newborn props, cake smash sets, and styled mini sessions have become what a lot my clients travel to me for. I am very proud of the sets I create for my clients. I try to make each one unique for them to set their session apart even if it is just small touches that make those changes. I am also very proud of the volunteer group I recently started called Shooting For Hope. It is a volunteer group on Facebook that serves to connect volunteer photographers with children that have life-threatening illnesses or that are terminally ill.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
One of the great things about being a photographer is that a large number of photographers are women and that a lot of them are also self-taught like me. I feel that this is very empowering to see all these women building very successful careers on their own in the photography industry while also juggling being a mom. In general, I feel that child care and maternity leave can be a huge barrier for women and their leadership in the workplace. It can be a struggle for women to thrive in the workplace as leaders while also meeting their children’s needs at home.
