Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaila HIll.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kaila. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up being the only adopted kid I knew. Growing up adopted, presented many challenges of my sense of belonging and contribution to the world. As a Detroit native, I always had respect for the hustle. From a very young age, I was still obsessed with the ideas of business. From printed calculators to full-blown cash registers. I always knew I wanted to own a business. In 2018, I did just that I started my own lash business, Sunkissed Beauty. Although I started off passionately, the company didn’t work out. From that instance, I was very discouraged and didn’t want to get back into the swing of things. It had been almost a year later, and I was tired of just dreaming without any action. So one night, I put my business plan in motion and started Sheb Society.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was not a smooth ride at all. I think living in the age of social media we expect things just to happen the moment we want it. The biggest struggle has been having confidence in my business. Having something of your own, you want people to invest in your dream. I think believing in your vision enough not to quit is the hardest part, and is also the part that is continually evolving. Balance is also one of the hardest parts of being a business owner. As a person, in general, you have to, make sure you are centered, and that becomes especially hard as a business owner.
Please tell us about Sheb Society.
Sheb Society LLC specializes in networking for young black professionals. We provide opportunities to bridge gaps between young black innovators. I am most proud of the innovation we try to push. That what sets us apart from the other brands. We don’t want just to be a networking group we want to expand and provide ways that allow other young professionals to follow in our footsteps. We hope that we break generational curses, while also providing the blueprint on how to offer generational blessings.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I think women are positioned for any position we set our mind to. We are now blessed to be in a time where we are the creators of our careers. There is no such thing as traditional anymore. Black women have been uniquely gifted in this field. We have somehow found a way to combine our culture and found a way to integrate it into the mainstream.
