Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Pan.
Karen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a Chinese lady moving with family from China to us when I was 13 years old! When I first come, my parents own the Chinese restaurant at Savannah, GA and then, I have moved to NY with my ex-husband on 2007, that’s a new life had started for me, living without the parents and need to take care, two little kids! After I took kids to the school, the only thing I do is cleaning and waiting for the time pass to pickup the kids, I feel so bored doing this over and over every day! About one and the half months I live in NY doing this every day, one of my friends come over ask me if I want to go to the nail salon, to learning something else besides stayed home and be bored, I thought it will be fun and pass the time easily instead stay home every day, I starting going to the nail salon, and try to learn something new, I think I will not forget this in my whole life, the first customer my friend ask me to work on, was an old age man, his son bring him over try to come for a pedicure, and he had a diabetes problem!
As we all know, diabetes clients are easily bleeding and hard to stop bleeding, and plus I guess he is too old and hard to clean himself good, so the feet are little over something! Lol! Be honest to all of you, I was shocked, I never know all this is part of the salon need to work with, I always thought that all they do is polish and make the cute nice designs, lol! When I got home that day, I toll my exhusband, I’m not going to do nails anymore, that’s something too much, I can’t stand this, differently I can even eat good that day, after I see that feet, but the bad thing is that I already registered for the school, and paying so much to become a cosmetology artist, I feel so bad that I sure go to the salon before deside to be a nail tech instead just by listening from the friend and register my self into the school, I took almost a week to work on my self to go back to the salon, and start polish on the tip every day, and try to make cute nice designs out, and spending at less 4hrs. per day on YouTube and magazine, anything that has the nail designs and how to work good on nails! I don’t even remember how long did I take on this, and I feel like I deep love to do nails and make designs.
And I don’t know why my brain just popped up a dream, I will be getting old one day, I will have problems to cut my nails and toenails one day, I want to help all these older people, who can’t take care them self-good to keep them clean, and also want to make all girl had the same dream that I have all ways to be perfect and pretty, ever since that, I love my job, and deep into it! I will spend any time I’m free to work on the nails and try the new designs, now, I feel so good that I had made the right decision at that point, I love my job because I’m really really enjoying what I’m doing! I feel so lucky that I can work on a job that I love and definitely earn money on it! And the funny thing about it now is, I don’t know is that because I work at the salon and had my daughter nails done all the time, my older daughter love to play on polish nails and make designs on nails game all the time, and also telling her teacher that, when she grows up, she wants to be a fantastic nail tech as well!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Anything in life is hard, all you have to do is, if u love it, keep going! Don’t get up! Do what you love and enjoy it!

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Not really at this point!
