Life and Work with Keeva Hargrove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keeva Hargrove.

Keeva, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began my career as a part-time hair stylist while working full time in corporate America as an Accountant. I took a leap of faith back in 2007 and resigned from the corporate world to work full-time as a hair stylist. I’ve worked in the beauty industry for over 20 years and there’s nothing else I’d rather do!

I’ve always had a passion for hair care, specifically, restoring damaged hair. My love for all things natural inspired me to use products with natural and organic ingredients on my clients. However, once I realized that many hair care products were made with potentially harmful ingredients (even the “natural” ones), I felt compelled to make changes.

I learned how potentially toxic some product ingredients could be through some of my clients who are cancer survivors. I did some research and found that products with plant-based ingredients were non-toxic and most beneficial for maintaining healthy hair and a balanced scalp. Plant-based products offer valuable nutrients that have the ability to be easily absorbed into our hair and skin. Hair is an extension of our bodies… and our skin is the body’s largest organ. Our skin is porous and absorbs whatever we put on it. So, what we put on our body is just as significant as what we put in our body.

Provisions™ was born when I became determined to create a product line that was free from toxic ingredients and full of the nutrients our hair and skin need. Every product is “Made with Nature’s Provisions” as our creator intended.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has definitely not been smooth. I learned more from my failures than anything else. However, I did not let my failures discourage me from following my passion.

Provisions™ began as a passion project for me, based on my desire to offer clients the most effective, non-toxic, hair care products possible. I began without a business plan, marketing strategy or even a website. LOL! However, as the brand has grown beyond my expectations, I’ve learned and adapted along the way.

My advice to other women is DON’T GIVE UP! The road will absolutely be bumpy, expect that for sure! But it will all be worth it when you see your vision grow. Another bit of advice, don’t be afraid to ask for help and know when you need it. I’ve learned that trying to do it all by yourself can be counter-productive. And last but not least, pray over your business every day! Prayer and meditation help to keep your mind clear and focused so that you can make good business decisions.

I’m a licensed Master Cosmetologist, Trichologist (hair doctor), and an Author with over 20 years experience in the hair care industry. I’m known for and specialize in restoring damaged hair and maintaining healthy hair. I am so grateful to have helped hundreds of women improve the health of their hair and scalps. My love for helping people get the best out of the hair that God has given them is what led me to the field of Trichology (the study of the hair and scalp and its disorders).

I believe what sets me apart from other stylists is my zeal for holistic hair care. While I can give clients a great style and healthy hair, I prioritize hair health first. I am brutally honest with clients who request a style that could compromise the health of their hair or scalp (think braids that damage edges, color treatments and/or relaxers on over-processed hair, etc.).

I also believe that a healthy diet is the best way to achieve long lasting results for healthy hair and treating/preventing scalp disorders. In fact, each book I write includes a chapter that illustrates how a well-balanced diet can greatly improve the health of your hair. My goal is to help everyone get healthy hair (and skin) they want and deserve.

I’m very proud of Provisions™ and what it offers to consumers. And as a chief formulator, I can stand behind the quality and integrity of each product. It is truly a blessing and I am humbled by the opportunity to give back to clients and the community in this way.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
To be honest, the hair care industry has few barriers for female leadership. Women take the lead in educating and training future stylists, owning and managing hair salons, creating product lines and much more. I’m grateful to work in an industry that embraces women in leadership.
