Today we’d like to introduce you to Renée Hicks.
Renée, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Three years ago I was on a journey to better myself mind, body and soul. One of the things I chose to do was challenge myself to read 12 books (with a goal of one book a month) during 2016. I actually exceeded my goal and read 15 (which was major for me being a non-reader). Something about that year ignited a fire in me that I didn’t see coming. I fell in love with reading! Fast forward to the fall of 2017; I decided that I wanted to take my reading a step further and read more books by authors of color. I created what I thought would be a simple little Facebook group/virtual book club that would bring together a few like-minded readers. After the response I received after just a couple of days of being a book club, I decided to lock down social media pages. Book Girl Magic essentially blew up overnight. It’s been such a joy joining together and buddy reading books with readers from all around the world. I also get to use my photography talents and capture beautiful pictures of the books I read. It’s a win-win.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Its been a very smooth road. We will reach our one year anniversary on November 9th, and I knew this book club was a gift from God with how well it was received by others, including celebs and authors. My advice to other women is to GO FOR IT. If it lies on your heart, nothing can stop you. Take that leap of faith!
Please tell us about your work.
I’m a social media and events coordinator, but a lot of people know me as a photographer. I’m most proud of the pictures that I capture both for my book club and for others and also the ability to bring people together from around the world through books.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
My mom. She’s the hardest working person I know, and as a single mom, she worked very hard to make sure that many opportunities were available to me, including going to college. She is my hero. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.
