Today we’d like to introduce you to Robbin Woody.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My mom was a hairdresser, so I grew up around it. I can remember as a little kid thinking ” If I can’t be a professional roller skater or dancer, then I definitely want to be a hairdresser like my mom.” I was obviously really young, but I could recognize even then that it was something special. I stuck to that and went to cosmetology school right after high school. I knew pretty much right away that hair color was what excited me most and I never looked back.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was hard starting out. I began my career at a salon that put a strong emphasis on education and putting in long hours assisting senior colorist. I worked 6 to 7 days a week and made very little money, but I believe that experience is what helped to make me the successful hair colorist I am today. Nothing good ever comes easy. I learned so much from that experience. I would say to others just starting out. Don’t take the easy road. Take every opportunity you can get and learn from those around you. I have been really lucky to work alongside so many talented hairdressers. I’ve tried to take every opportunity presented to me to learn something from each of them.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Darling and Company – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in natural looking hair colors that are soft and dimensional. I’m definitely known for my blondes. I can pack in the foils like no one else. I am very detail oriented. That being said, I also enjoy the creativity of hair painting just as much. From the iciest blondes to the richest brunettes, I enjoy creating it all.
I feel so proud to have a successful career where I really do love what I do. It is such an amazing feeling getting to be creative all day while making people feel good.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I don’t feel like there is any more of a barrier for women in our industry. Clients choose who they see based on the stylist ability to create what they want. Our work is our walking advertisement. If you like what you see, you will want to go to that stylist whether its a man or a woman.
