Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Miller.
Tara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started in Florida working for a celebrity stylist. I moved to Atlanta to be closer to family and started working as a stylist for a popular chain salon. Worked for them for a few years and became the manager for them for a year before I decided to open my own business. Found the salon suites I am currently at and started Salon Chic. I am very passionate about my clients and making people feel as amazing as they are. Everyone deserves to feel special and pampered. So, being able to start my own salon and provide that experience is what drove me to take the leap into entrepreneurship.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business wasn’t easy. It takes a lot of dedication and time to get started, but it’s worth it. When you first begin there is a lot of sitting and waiting. There is a lot of coming back after work hours, but if you hang in there, it will all come together. It may be a struggle at first, but if you are willing to put in the work and hours, then the rewards are endless.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a master cosmetologist. And brow artist. I do men’s cuts, women’s cuts, children’s hair, and color. But I specialize in corrective color and vivid/fantasy colors. Almost everyone has had a bad color or cut. Either an at home experience or a salon experience. I try to offer solutions to get a look my guest is happy with. I never shy away from a challenge!
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Social media is very important! But always remember word of mouth is also critical. Happy guests will send you other guests! Find a stylist who inspires you and just speak to them. Even just speaking with another professional can improve your work. Never hesitate to ask for help. Salon life is all about adapting to our guest’s needs and learning constantly.

Tara was probably one of the best students Rivertown School of Beauty has ever had. There was never a time that we didn’t know this talented young lady would be successful. She certainly has the talent, but she has the heart and drive to be a success.
