Life & Work with Athena Walker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Athena Walker.

Hi Athena, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Where do I start? This part of my journey actually began with me leaving Atlanta six years ago and vowing never to return. I lost myself in a horrible relationship and found myself over 100lbs heavier than I ever imagined I’d be. I accepted a lucrative job in Texas, took my family and left to begin again. Still miserable but slightly at peace, I pressed on for the sake of my children. I started taking group fitness classes one day while waiting on my son to finish basketball practice. Being classically trained in the fundamentals, I realized how much I enjoyed the art of Dance and how important a part of my life it once was. So in 2017, I started Perfectly Imperfect Fitness and Wellness Company in DeSoto, Texas. With cardio dance-inspired formats designed for women who somehow lost themselves along the way and just need to know where to start again. With privacy and personal development in mind, our dance party is pop-up designed. I bring the party to you and we leave it all on the dance floor. I’ve spent the past few years meeting wonderful women, dancing, living, and learning myself along the way.

Fast forward to 2021, while filming episodes for Finding YOUR Fit, a television show based on my journey. I came full circle back to Atlanta, where I found myself behind the scenes on a film set. Re-igniting a flame for entertainment and production that I thought I would never be able to revisit and starting a union I never imagined. Proudly, as the owner of PIFit and now Consulting Creative Producer for major streaming networks and film. I have been able to now make the message of “Generational Health” more widespread and available to women of all ages and fitness stages through media and entertainment. My journey to whole health for myself allows me to show other women that doing EVERYTHING that you love and loving EVERYTHING that you do can be a reality. There is no one lane to life’s highway so use them all!! Smile, wave and swerve!!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road has not been easy, I have had many struggles along the way. I thought I couldn’t juggle the tasks of a full-time job, being an entrepreneur, single mother, and trying to still find happiness myself. There have been times when I told myself I had to choose. Then when I least expect it, I meet a woman that tells me how inspiring I am. Or how I gave them the courage to take a leap of faith or even just to take the time to love and focus on themselves. It reminds me that it’s not in vain. The journey I am on, I don’t do it alone. The women I reach inspire me to continue sometimes when I need it the most. They help me just as much as I help them, if not more.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Perfectly Imperfect is a business, however, I consider myself an artist. The entire concept of my approach to total health for women is based around me believing in my own journey and finding my fit. That is what sets me apart and I believe that’s what I am most proud of. The transparency of sharing my own highs and lows and finding a way to live in my own truth and follow my dreams no matter the age, stage or place. I live the life I love, love the person I am and live for loving the person I am becoming. Fitness is all-encompassing; the physical transformation is just the tip of the iceberg. My dance fitness format has a focus on “Generational Health” which is women’s mothers, sisters, daughters, cousins, etc. Dancing, having fun, getting fit and coming together on an even level of Femininity. Bridging the gap between all ages and continuing the journey to wellness…mentally, spiritually, and physically.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Covid 19 took a major toll on the fitness industry as well as the mental health of many. Staying positive and encouraging others to do the same became difficult if not impossible at times. I gained some weight during quarantine and had to find my way back. Through the rough times, good came from it eventually. In spending time at home, I was able to try new and different things that led me to create footage that later became part of my streaming television show Finding YOUR Fit. Opening my eyes, heart and mind have taught me to enjoy the silver linings when they shine through the clouds.
