Life & Work with Cayla Lamar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cayla Lamar.

Hi Cayla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a 19-year-old fashion ad portrait photographer born and raised in Atlanta. I’ve been a visual creator for as long as I can remember. I got my first camera in 5th grade and would take pictures of everything. I was also really big on filming me and my friends doing covers of popular songs at the time. Before I went into photography full time, I was mostly doing painting until I realized that monetizing off of painting made it less enjoyable. That’s when I moved into photography because I was comfortable with monetizing it and it was a quicker way to get out the message or aesthetic. I decided to focus mainly on fashion because all of my shoots started off with me being inspired by a specific piece of clothing. From my first shoot on, I tend to find the clothes and build everything else around it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am fortunate enough to have had smooth sailing so far. Being a part of a photography collective like Black women Photographers has helped tremendously as far as education, finding work, and overall building community.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a fashion and portrait photographer and I’m known for my use of color and my unique portrayal of Black stories and Black beauty. I’m most proud of my attention to detail and my eye for all things aesthetically pleasing. I’m also really proud of my ability to make my models comfortable and to be able to work with them to create a tangible story from just our ideas.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
It doesn’t matter when you start creating as long as you start. I’m a firm believer in rebranding myself and being an active participant in my growth. So, for anyone too scared to start something new you can always rebrand and go back to the drawing board if something doesn’t work but you have to try it first.
