Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlotte Swann.
Hi Charlotte, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am the Founder/CEO/Chief Storyteller of UnCharted Path Productions. My company is geared towards creating Books, TV, and Film centered around psychology. I have been writing for over 20 years.
The main reason for founding this production company was driven by my son, Derrek who recently passed away in 2021 at the age of 30. Derrek was an exuberant, adventurous, animated young man who chased after his dreams without fear. The mental disorders that plagued him for years without being diagnosed, he finally succumbed to them. I am an advocate for mental health and will create short films, tv series, and films based on the many mental disorders that my son suffered from. This is my why! This is for him!
As we create, develop, and explore the lives of our characters, UPP will demonstrate that psychology, therapy, and counseling are important tools we should use in order to lead a happy, healthy, and fulfilled existence.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Achieving anything worthwhile is never an easy task.
Many obstacles on this journey of writing has been an internal struggle. Through tears I wrote! Through reliving pain, I wrote! Through reliving past experiences through the fictional characters that I created, I wrote!
Through that process of moving forward no matter what, over the years, writing has become a kind of therapy for me. Before I could write the first page of my upcoming novel, Red Line District; I had to embrace my love for writing once again. I sat my pen to paper down for more than 20 years to be the best mom I could be to my four children. Once they got older, I went on a journey of self-care. In that search, I read a quote that Oprah Winfrey spoke, “Look inward – the loving begins with you.”
The first book that I ever wrote is still on a floppy disk – all 400+ pages.
Writing is much easier now with the vast technological options, however, I still like to write with a pen to paper every now and then. I love a good challenge!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Uncharted Path Productions was formed with the goal of producing tv shows, films, short stories, and novels centered around mental illness.
To show what life looks like from a fictional character’s perspective, I will incorporate some of the mental struggles that my son Derrek and many other people face daily.
Creating and writing captivating stories is what sets me apart. In addition to telling these fascinating stories, UPP has and will continue to establish partnerships with national and local mental health facilities.
My debut novel, Red Line District, is my proudest achievement. It is about two childhood friends now in their 40s, who work for the same organization that assists underserved communities on the surface but holds a secret that will test the loyalty of one and honor of the other.
One of the main characters of the book, Cassandra Boucher, demonstrates what a true ally looks like.
On numerous occasions, Cassandra observes her best friend, Sariah DuBois being treated differently from her. By blending in with those who look like her outside of the Red Line District, Cassandra realizes that privilege is a weapon that she can use. She was recruited by Dean DuBois, Sariah’s uncle, where she acclimated to the ways of Red Lines secret society – Hidden District.
Red Line District was born out of necessity to stand up to a long-standing system that adversely affects diverse communities. It is a psychological, suspense-filled, dark-humored, dramedy.
