Life & Work with Christina Lazare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Lazare.

Hi Christina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It all started with a leap of faith. I always knew that my path was to help people; but I never knew where that notion would lead me. Originally, I thought my purpose would shine in marketing because I always had an affinity for the arts and media. However, it took a semester abroad in South Africa (in 2004) to reveal that my path was to shine in human services. I met this amazing woman named Thande in my marketing class who encouraged me to volunteer at an HIV/AIDS clinic. Working at that clinic opened my eyes to see that people are complex and need support from individuals who understand that we are all one decision away from a life-changing course of action. And, even if the choice is not the best, it does not mean that we do not deserve the best resources, living conditions and opportunities for a different life. Fast forward to today, I took that lesson and became a force of nature in providing support services and now housing options to those who have barriers that were created from a decision.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely not been smooth; however, it has evolved me into the formidable person I am today. My challenges were always surrounded by two consistent things. One was having conflict with those who provide services under the guise of helping; when in actuality, their main purpose is to serve their bottom-line. The second challenge was finding people who wanted to invest into causes that would be fulfilling but may not get them rich immediately. The way I have managed these challenges is remembering that I am the one responsible for my path. My path is to help people and it is my responsibility to honor that with all that I do. I know that as long as I am true to my bottom line, I can conquer any barrier that comes my way.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the Director of Affordable Housing for 1st Place Affordable Housing LLC. We provide a variety of affordable housing options with resource linkage, internet access, utilities, and furniture-all included. Our program specializes in providing a 2 -handed approach in housing support. Our partnerships provide a circle of support for all of our clients and help them connect to resources that will help them maintain what they’ve gotten.

I specialize in what I’d like to call “making magic happen”. In my 20+ years in social services, there has not been an obstacle that I could not overcome. One of the many quotes I’d often say to my client is “the worst thing a person could tell you is no and no is not the worst thing; its an opportunity to figure out how to get that yes.” I lived true to that with every person I advocate for, employment opportunity I’ve helped obtained, free lodging I’ve helped navigate: I didn’t stop until I got my yes.

This superpower became really helpful when I was formulating the housing department for Policing Alternatives and Diversion Initiative (PAD). As their Housing Coordinator, I was known for getting each of my clients temporarily or permanently housed no matter what the barriers were. My ability to make and keep relationships is my God-given gift and I am grateful that I have the privilege to help those in need with it.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a very curious child. I was one of the kids who would ask “why” for everything and would never accept “no” for an answer. I was also a very generous and helpful kid. I volunteered for every school activity that involved giving back to the community. I was very creative and was drawn to the arts. I participated in several musicals growing up and loved being on stage.

As an adult, it is safe to say not much has changed (lol) and I am happy it didn’t. Nothing brings me more joy than being an integral part of connecting someone to a resource or person that could change their life.
