Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth DeVoe.
Hi Elizabeth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I picked up my first camera in August of 2021, less than a year ago. It was an older model, one I had bought off a friend for relatively cheap some time ago that I just hadn’t touched. I was looking for a way to wind down from my day job, and I thought I would try taking the camera on my walk with my dog, Bear. We walked through the neighborhood and I saw a mailbox falling down, covered in vines like it hadn’t been opened in years. I took my first photo, and while it wasn’t perfect, the shutter, the click, the image; it all had me in love. It gave me a sense of comfort. It was one of the first things that I felt so confident in wanting to pursue. So, I studied like hell. I listened to every podcast I could on my to work and home, I read every blog post and article, and most importantly, I kept walking and shooting. In October, I took my first client, and the joy they had seeing their family’s photos was so incredible. Each month brought more sessions, and I started to explore which ones brought me joy. Fast forward to today, and I am now primarily shooting couples in love; their elopements, engagements, or just because days. I’m only just beginning, and I love every minute of it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing worthwhile is usually smooth. Learning the technical business side of things has been difficult. Managing my time and energy between a full-time job and my photography has been a challenge. I think the biggest struggle though, and the one worth fighting through the most, has been finding my own creative style. There are so many amazing photographers out there and so many people ready to critique your work, and all you can do is soak all of that in and listen to your gut. Create art that makes you happy and that fills you up. So that’s what I do now. I create in a way that brings me joy, and in turn my couples feel that and it comes through in their images.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an Atlanta-based photographer specializing in couples and elopements. Working with me is an experience; my couples get someone who gets to know them for who they are so that I can show their story through their images in the most authentic way. I love the tiny details of a wedding, and I pride myself in capturing un-posed, in-between moments. I love capturing couples out in nature or doing something that they love that means something to them. I help my couples plan a day that truly embodies who they are, whether that means going to the coffee shop they went to on their first date or playing the right song at the right moment to set the mood. My photography is natural, real, raw moments captured beautifully.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see elopements becoming much more common. Gone are the days where elopement means you run off in secret to get married at a courthouse. My personal definition of an elopement is a meaningful, purposeful, intimate wedding where the focus of the day is on the couple, their love, and what makes them and their story unique. It usually has less than 25 people but is in no way small. Some couples are going big and hiking huge mountains to say their vows. Some are saying “I do” in their favorite brewery. The definition for elopements is ever-changing, and I foresee more and more couples choosing that pathway in the coming years.
