Today we’d like to introduce you to Marché Day.
Marché, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Well, I was born and raised in Washington, DC until middle school when we moved to Atlanta. When it comes to my current career, that story began in my early twenties. As most twenty-something year olds I contemplated my purpose, exploring varies jobs looking for the right fit. At the same time the film industry began to migrate to Atlanta, growing at a rapid rate with plenty of possibilities and no signs of slowing down. This led me to consider the industry as a career option.
I wanted to apply my current skills at the time, so I originally set out to join the hair department. To do this I worked as an extra, booking various jobs in hopes of learning about set life and meeting those I wanted to connect with. Little did I know there was a world of opportunity I had yet to discover. On set I began to network, asking questions not only with my intended department but other departments as well, learning and growing along the way. That’s when I discovered the stunt department, a world full of inspiring and creative possibilities. I met an extremely kind and knowledgeable performer who answered all the questions I threw at them with ease. Through conversation I learned that there was a shortage of African-American female stunt performers. “There aren’t that many performers that look like you, so if you commit yourself and train hard you can definitely go far.”.
Armed with this newfound knowledge, I started training. I grew up playing lacrosse in grade school into my first year of college so my ability to take a hit, check. I researched and found local stunt gyms, getting my body in the best shape I possibly could, and began networking to meet others on the same journey. My stunt career finally began when I started doubling for Wunmi Mosaku as “B15” in the Marvel Disney+ series Loki. Since then I have been extremely fortunate to work on projects in LA, Boston, and Atlanta. I am still in the early stages of my career, but I am continuing to refine my skills and talents to elevate myself professionally as a stunt performer and break barriers while overcoming mental and physical limits.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
In life no journey is completely linear, and every road comes with an uphill climb at some point. There have been times that I have been faced with challenges that would’ve made some people give up but I find that it’s how you respond to those situations that determine the narrative of your journey.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a stunt performer so essentially I am safety for the actors and actresses on set. If I am doubling, it’s my job to make sure that my actress is safe. In regards to my skills, I believe my greatest skill as a performer is not any physical attribute but my mental ability to listen and learn while I grow into the performer I aspire to be. While there are so many amazing talents that are considered stunts, my experience includes fight training, horseback riding, scuba diving & tactical firearms training.
How do you define success?
I define success as learning to enjoy the journey, not staying in the past or always looking into the future but enjoying the present moment. It can be easier said that done at times but I try to remember that whatever goal is set before me, the key is finding fulfillment in the process.
