Life & Work with Marcus Kole

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Kole.

Hi Marcus, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I owned a clothing company for over ten years and sold it in 2016 to INKED magazine. Was not really sure my next thing so I started doing photography for other companies. I was the photographer for my T-shirt line and the images were what helped the business grow. I love shooting lifestyle but have found myself shooting everything from kid’s toys to electric bikes now. No matter what I am shooting, I try to think of the product as my own business and how I would want to be represented. There are many favorite spots around Atlanta to shoot in but I try to stay away from the busy locations where other photographers are always shooting.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was very slow at first. I went from shooting five times a week with my clothing line to maybe once a week. Like anything, it took time to get my name out there because people only knew my clothing company, not the guy behind the images. Now it is my full-time job and my house is filled with the most random products to shoot. I love it!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work stands out the way I capture colors and shoot at angles as if filming a movie instead of taking pictures. For some reason, a lot of people think I am on the west coast from my style of photography. I guess that comes from my love of the skater culture and the old-school Dogtown images. There are so many better photographers than me but I capture a vibe instead of an image. I want people to feel like they are in the image and connect with the model or location.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I am lucky my wife is a model (I met her at a photoshoot). We were blessed to keep working during all the Covid craziness. She and I stayed super busy but then I started shooting my models again and wore a mask. My business actually grew during covid because we were still moving ahead and businesses needed photography.
