Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Vaverek.
Hi Sonya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been baking since I can remember. I grew up in a house where my mom baked weekly and taught me how to bake. After college, I realized I wanted to become a pastry chef; instead, I chose to follow my husband and raise our family. I took that time to practice, experiment and learn everything I could about baking. Baking is a science as well as an art. It takes practice and there is a huge learning curve. It took many years and loads of failures to perfect my recipes. I also work hard to incorporate as many fresh and local ingredients as I can in my recipes. Supporting local farmers and growers and using fresh, quality ingredients is so important to us.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road; putting my dreams on hold for many years was my first obstacle. I’m self taught, so learning techniques, perfecting recipes, and keeping with new trends in the baking world has been fun, but not always easy. When we went headfirst into making the business official, there was so much to learn! Between the business aspect and social media marketing, it has been a learning experience every step of the way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Oh Sweet! Bakery is a full-service Cottage bakery. We offer everything from wedding cakes and dessert bars to decorated cookies and treat boxes. We offer a variety of items – rather than offering one flagship item, we focus on high quality, locally sourced ingredients and the best tasting treats around. We have been told that our brownies and cinnamon rolls are “life-changing”. We bake everything to order and spend hours on presentation and decoration. We feel our customer service is top-notch, and we strive to provide a great experience for our customers from ordering to delivery.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Some of my favorite books have been Atomic Habits by James Clear and Profit First by Mike Michalowicz. I am always on the hunt for any books that are small business related so I can continue to learn and grow as a small business owner. I also belong to several cookie and baking groups on Facebook. Those groups are great resources for improving and learning the baking side of the business. I’ll also admit to you – I usually switch between watching Hallmark movies and listening to true crime podcasts while I am baking.
