Today we’d like to introduce you to Street Light Boutique.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Que Sera: It all started in Little 5 Points, 16 years ago, on Colquitt Ave. Our relationship began when Rahlou walked into a clothing boutique, then owned by me, and we engaged in a conversation that revolved around music, fashion, and fulfillment for HOURS. We’ve been in this thing together since then! Two children and many years of marriage later, we decided to bring our talents together and build Street Light Boutique, a husband and wife DJ/artist/producer/songwriting duo, which then evolved into Street Light Boutique LLC, a multimedia music production house.
Rahlou: I’ve always known that music was where my heart lies. A lifelong artist, I came to Atlanta to study videography at the Art Institute. At that point, I had already been deejaying for several years. I started record collecting and knew that I wanted to create music of my own. When I met Que Sera and realized how passionate she was about music, I coached her on how to be a disc jockey. One day, while we were walking through a park, I asked her to sing for me. She would always share this story about how she stopped singing after she froze on stage at a talent show when she was 13; yet, she dances and sings around the house constantly. I wanted her to break that mold, and I am glad that she did!
Que Sera: Since then, we have evolved into not just DJ/producer/songwriters but have also worked on composing scores for indie films and work together to create visuals for our musical works. We also came full circle with the fashion when we decided to design a line of our own merchandise last year.
Rahlou: Now we are working collectively, as not just artists, but as small business owners that operate a boutique multimedia music production house. All of our skills and talents mesh together! From video and photography, to project management, to music research, to poetry and songwriting; we do it all! We’ve even taken our children as our proteges and are showing them the tools and tricks of the trades.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our biggest obstacle has been scaling our growth, alongside managing the responsibility of nurturing a family. Creatively utilizing our talents to fund our passion has required tenacity and lots of hard work and long hours. People often think that as artists, we have taken the easy road, but in actuality, most days it is really tough! Our art plays an important part in our lives, but so does our family. Finding that delicate balance between artist/entrepreneur and family guy/gal is sometimes very challenging.
Maintaining our philosophy of ‘moving freely without boundaries’ musically has also presented its challenges in a society that often wants to categorize music and art. By sticking to music and projects that we are passionate about, we have been able to grow an organic following that supports our music and works. The journey has been rewarding!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a multimedia music production team, therefore we are involved in the development of a project from beginning to end. Our work has developed out of a passion for music and all the artistic elements that help bring it alive: composing, producing, songwriting, editing, video, and fashion. Our creative direction allows us to holistically take hold of a sound and bring it to fruition for all the senses to enjoy.
Living between Atlanta, GA and Brooklyn, NY we have maintained many DJ residencies in NYC, as well as deejayed in Atlanta, Bermuda, London, Paris, and Senegal.
We have independently released a self-titled EP and are preparing to release new music in the fall of 2021!
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
People are often surprised to hear that we teach. Most surprisingly is that we homeschool our two teenage sons! Through homeschooling them, we have been able to nurture their passion for music and being behind the camera. Music production, video editing, animation, deejay lessons, and photography are all part of their daily homeschool lessons.
In addition, we have developed a workshop series called Beat Sense, which teaches young people the relevance of academic content in artistic practices. We often neglect the number sense that is necessary when deejaying, or how relevant poetic devices are when writing a song. What better way to help young people understand the importance of what they are learning in school than to show them how it can be applied through real-world experiences.
