Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyrus Solomon.
Hi Tyrus, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started off contemplating my career path using a sketch pad and spare pencils I’ve collected over the years. It was Summer 2014 and I was fresh out of high school. After much toiling, I decided to follow what I knew and not what I had to learn, of course, my path involved learning new things about art in general but what I understand now only adds to the gift I was born to give. I began entering group exhibitions across South Louisiana and even as far as Texas, NYC, and Baltimore. This urge to create propelled me forward and every chance I had; I took it. My love and passion for culture, art, and creativity got me here in this space. What I do continues to fuel me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road but it has been a rewarding one. Most of the struggles I faced along the way involved finding my footing, finding a following, and seeking opportunities that represent art on the level I wish to celebrate. Along with finding these avenues also bought challenges of being misunderstood, losing friends, and forging a path contrary to what’s considered viable in today’s society. I made it work. I can humbly say I’m proud of where I am and where I’m heading.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a fine artist, designer, art dealer, and aristocrat lol. What I do is create. I design novelties, clothing, and paraphernalia. I love to inspire and move others through my creativity and self-expression. My specialty involves oil painting, respectively. I also revel in cultural undertones and surreal themes. I am known for being me. I’m also widely known for being recognized and loved by Erykah Badu (she’s mentioned often surrounding my artistry). I’ve worked with Thomas Hoepker as well, famous MAGNUM Photographer who’s shot legends like Basquiat, Muhammad Ali, and Andy Warhol. I like to think I’m cool as those guys. What sets me apart from others? I’d say my range. I’m usually showcasing several styles and genres at once. I usually have multiple layers of works along with selective items inspired by those very same works. Diversity.
What matters most to you? Why?
My purpose matters most to me above all. That “something” in me that needs to get out and in those dark moments where I felt like I couldn’t continue is my “why”. I’ve always had this unspoken urge to “keep going” and I do this for anyone else who may feel discouraged. I literally intend for my art to move people. And it does.
