Today we’d like to introduce you to Xiaotong Guo.
Hi Xiaotong, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in a small city in eastern China, it wasn’t until I came to Savannah College of Art and Design that I embarked on my jewelry journey. Currently, I completed my master’s degree in jewelry. Since I was a child, I have been told to pursue perfection, as if the pursuit is a lifelong process. However, I am puzzled about perfection. I am discovering imperfections and finding their beauty. My continued pursuit of beauty is expressed through my obsession with jewelry. I want to put these imperfections into my works, elevating their beauty in the form of jewelry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. Although jewelry is a very interesting subject, it is also a complex one. So I often question whether I’m doing the “right” thing. In the process of learning, I need to keep trying different things until I find what I really want to do and what really touches me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I consider myself as an imperfection. So most of my time, I’m looking for the perfections. Until I discovered that there are many imperfections in the world, and imperfections bring different personalities and beauty. So I make jewelry out of these imperfections I find, like calcified shells and driftwood. I want my jewelry at first glance to be beautiful and perfect, but at a closer look, you will find they are made by imperfections. That is what gives them life. By looking at my works, I hope people will think about other imperfections in their life. And find the value and beauty in them.
What are your plans for the future?
I hope I can stick to my jewelry path in the future and make more jewelry that can speak for me.
