Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharron Leigh.
Sharron, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been into health and preventative wellness since I can remember. My granddad on my mother’s side was an MD and so were all of his brothers, so I guess you could say taking care of people’s health runs in my family. In 2009, I created a brand focused on environmentally friendly and health-conscious products for living a healthy lifestyle. While researching that project, I began to learn more about Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) which is one of the most common healing systems in the world used by practitioners for over 3,500 years. At the same time, I was struggling with some general anxiety and was reluctant to follow a conventional western medical approach with pharmaceuticals. I received my first acupuncture treatment for anxiety which changed my personal and professional life forever. Shortly after I enrolled in the Master’s of Science and Traditional Oriental Medicine program and continued through completion of both my Master’s and Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In January 2011, I started the TCM program at Emperor’s College of Traditional Oriental Medicine in LA (https://www.emperors.edu). In December of the same year, I elected to transfer to Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (https://www.pacificcollege.edu) in NYC and while moving across the country was a personal challenge, a few months later, in early 2012, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I maintained my standing as a full-time student, attending class and clinical rounds while going through cancer treatments. As a cancer survivor who leveraged acupuncture and Chinese medicine as part of my therapy, it gave me a deeper perspective for patient care, progressive treatment options through TCM and a clear vision for my larger purpose in life.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Acupuncture Atlanta – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I practice at Acupuncture Atlanta (https://www.acuatlanta.com) in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta. Acupuncture Atlanta is one of the first acupuncture clinics in the State of Georgia with a focus on various specialties and general health. I specialize in treating anxiety, sleep disorders, women’s health issues, including fertility, pain management, and general health issues. Since you asked… what sets me apart from others, is in addition to completing the Master’s of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine degree (MSTOM), I also completed the Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese medicine degree, (DACM). It is not necessary to complete the DACM program in order to become a licensed Acupuncturist and function as a primary independent healthcare provider. By furthering my education, it enhanced my understanding of Chinese medicine and biomedicine in developing and applying practice skills in an expanding integrative healthcare system.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My professional goals are to continue to focus on exceptional and compassionate patient care. I am also continuing my education by going through certification in functional medicine as I feel it really compliments the approach of traditional Chinese medicine. While conventional medicine is critical in emergency care situations, particularly at saving lives, by integrating functional medicine into my practice it will help empower my patients to be in more control of their health. Rather than covering up chronic conditions with generic drugs, it’s important to identify the underlying root cause of chronic conditions to begin with. In doing so, creating a personalized treatment plan for my patients can help improve their lives while also achieving optimal health.
