Meet Alante Baugh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alante Baugh.

Alante, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My strong interest in the arts was shaped and develop early in life through family members! At 12 years old, I found the love of my life, Fashion! My interest in fashion started after watching my grandmother and uncle sew garments for family members and friends!

I started designing when I will take old clothes around the house and reconstruct them into something new. Than later creating customized Spike and studded combat boots for me and eventually selling over 50-pair of boots for friends and clients throughout Chicago. The massive response from selling my customized boots prompted me to transition from dance and work as a costume designer for the Full Effect Theatrical Dance Company along with assistant creative director Blair Christian. Later I started working at the boys and girls club in the art department as a sewing instructor. teaching 10-15 girls how to sew.

Now years later, 2020, I am an alumn of the Illinois Institute of Arts Chicago, where I perfected my craft in sewing, embellishments, and tailoring. Becoming a two-time award-winning fashion designer and showcasing my first collection in Neiman Marcus. Also designing and sewing student’s prom dresses and suits. I have also built lasting relationships with celebrities and fashion moguls, including Teyanna Taylor, Serena Williams, etc. I am creating short fashion films that you can watch on my YouTube channel. I am currently working on my men’s underwear and leather bag line to release later this year.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being from the city of Chicago building a luxury fashion brand has not been easy. There is a lack of resources for young up and coming fashion designers. I believe its a challenge also because Chicago is not known for its fashion and does not have many opportunities or jobs for fashion designers. Because of these challenges, it has not been an easy road but with technology and social media, I believe these challenges will no longer be a challenge in the near future.

Alright – so let’s talk business.  What else should we know about you and your career so far?
Alante Baugh is a Black-owned luxury fashion brand, best known for his groundbreaking menswear with a concept of beauty and the beast that incorporates soft feminine attributes to masculine pieces. AB specializes in leather, topstitching, embellishments of spikes, studs, and diamonds.

On a mission to focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the fashion industry, I spent a lot of time wanting to change the idea around the men’s clothing department at shopping centers. Growing up, I spent time shopping with my mother and sister – I always noticed that the male department was always stale and in the store’s back with low lighting. Shopping in the menswear section was never a fun, bright experience like shopping in the women’s department, which is why I plan to change the narrative for shopping centers and create a more inclusive environment for all shoppers. The Beauty and the Beast concept opts-out of gender identified fashion by mixing feminine and masculine aesthetics to bring a new approach to the fashion industry.
