Meet Alex Mitchell of Cumberland Law Group in Northwest Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Mitchell.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey to becoming an attorney was not the traditional route most would take. The thought of a career in law never crossed my mind until my Junior year in high school. The first day of school, I made an argument to all of my teachers about how beneficial it would be to allow us to have the opportunity to do homework in class versus us having to take it home.

The only teacher to agree with me was my math teacher. Her name was Sallie Speed. She stated, “You should really consider being an attorney.” That was the first moment I really started to focus on my future career path.

After graduating from Shades Valley High School in Birmingham, AL, I attended Jacksonville State University. While there, I majored in Criminal Justice and graduated in the Spring of 2011. After graduation, I took a year off and work in the health care industry transporting patients. I disliked it so much that I decided to resign in Spring of 2012, months before I even knew which law school I would be attending.

In Fall of 2012, I moved to Louisiana to start Law School at Southern University Law Center (SULC) located in Baton Rouge, LA. This was a huge step out of my comfort zone. I had never lived more than an hour away from home. I accredit SULC with making me the person who I am today. After my first semester, I knew that being “big law attorney” was not for me. I loved helping people solve their legal issues and serving underserved communities.

After graduating in 2015, I took a big risk and with the help of my family, I moved to Atlanta, GA with no job and about $400 to my name to begin studying for the Georgia Bar Exam. I spent about 10-12 hours a day for 10 long weeks studying for the bar exam. I sat for the bar at the end of July. The next three months were extremely tough, I was unemployed and had to move back to Birmingham in order to survive. At the end of October 2015, I received the best news of my life. I had passed the bar exam. I firmly believe that as long as I had my license to practice law, I would be a walking business. I was sworn into the State Bar of Georgia on December 4, 2015. I signed up my first client 45 min after being sworn in. That was also the very first day I started my law firm.

I traveled back and forth to Atlanta to sign up clients, attend court proceedings, and assist clients in resolving their case. August 2016 was the month I permanently moved to Atlanta, GA.

My very first client, who was a friend from college, truly believed in my abilities from the beginning. I grew my law practice over the next three and a half years. We specialize Criminal Defense, DUIS, Personal Injury (Car and Truck Accidents), and our newest area is Tax Defense. In the past year, we have grown exponentially in the Atlanta area and have assisted clients from all walks of life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been easy but I must say it has been fun. Being new to the entrepreneurial life definitely had its up and down within the first couple of years. There were definitely times where I felt I was in over my head. As time passed, I temporarily closed my law firm after being hired by another firm who sold me empty promises. I discovered while working there, that they could never pay me what I am truly worth. As soon as I left that firm business took off. In essence, my financial fears are why I stayed as long as I could. I continued to build my brand through networking in various circles throughout Atlanta.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Cumberland Law Group, LLC – what should we know?
We are a boutique firm who specializes in Tax/Audit Defense, Criminal Defense (most of our cases are DUIs but we handle other Misdemeanors and Felonies), and Personal Injury (Car accidents, Truck Accidents, and Slip and Falls). I am most proud that we are able to get favor results for all of our clients whether it’s avoiding jail time, adequate compensation for injuries sustained in an accident, or saving clients money on their owed taxes.

A lot firms, whether big or small, treat their clients as cash cows and don’t even explain the process in how they will help them. Here we care about our clients and want to keep them in the loop of what’s going on. Nearly all my clients have my personal cell phone number and can reach me at any time to ask questions. It’s very important to me to build that rapport between my clients.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Perseverance. No matter what happens to you in business or life, you cannot give up. I tell everyone that I meet that I may not be a genius but I will out work anyone and never quit.

Pricing:

  • Misdemeanors: $2500 and up
