Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Trent.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Trent. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started creating music in Chicago during my college years. At the time, I was going to school, riding in car clubs, and enjoying life. One day my cousin Influence invited me to a studio session. I was just going to hang out then he asked me to write a verse for his song. It was my first time writing & recording music. I did the verse, then everyone in the room started loosing it, telling me how good I did the vibes were real positive. I liked the way that felt, so I took that moment to heart & started writing songs to make music professionally.
From there, I found producers & anyone willing to work with me on my journey. My family was very supportive & I was able to put together a music demo in Chicago. My music got in the hands of a lady named Francine, who’s nephew Keith is an A&R. The stars were aligned because I was already working with Trabeats, a producer that Keith was starting to work with. At this point, I still needed a lot of work so I decided to drop out of school to focus on making it in music. As a team, we were all able to come together with a plan that ultimately got Trabeats and I moved from Chicago to Atlanta to create records for placements in 2010.
After a successful 1st year, I switched gears from singer-songwriter to making my own records. Shortly after that, producer-engineer Cope introduced me to the team at Madison Records in ATL who supported me producing my music. Later in 2015 I was introduced by producer Big Zar to the team at “The Building.” During this time, I was able to start Black Gold Records with label mate Lord Bisque & make my album called “Iceberg Trent.” After that I released my album “Time Travel” in collaboration with Woodfire Records in 2018. Fast forward to today I’m currently working on new music, my next project “Chitown Trent” will release this year 2020.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely been a hard path. However, I’m enjoying the journey, focused on my destination. I am grateful for all the people, family, & friends that have helped me and been there along the way.
Black Gold Records – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Black Gold Records is an independent record label founded in Atlanta, started in 2015 with label mate Lord Bisque. As of now, we create, produce, & perform our records in house. We also send out records for placements with other artist. I am most proud of my album “Iceberg Trent” which was the 1st to release on the label, done all in house. We aspire to sign/manage upcoming new acts & help bring them to the world, developing a unique sound. We look to people such as Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis as inspiration. We want to contribute to the music business in a major way, one step, one day at a time. We want to help foster a new sound. We aren’t trying to control artists or put them in a box.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far has been making my album “Time Travel”. It gave me experience & really opened up doors for me & still does to this day. Being acknowledged by my peers in the industry strengthens my belief to always keep going.
