Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Weatherby.
Alex, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a trial lawyer in Atlanta, Georgia. I work to make lives better with honor, efficiency, and effectiveness. I offer legal representation to folks in catastrophic injury, truck accident, class action, and professional malpractice cases.
I’m the first lawyer in my family. My father is a plumbing contractor, and he encouraged me at a young age to go to college and graduate school. After working summers for his plumbing company, I was not hard to convince! I have great respect for construction workers. Those summers provided me with a strong work ethic and problem-solving skills to get the tough jobs done.
I went to college at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, and majored in Communication Studies. I focused on public speaking and critical writing. After working an internship at a law firm, I decided that I could use these skills well as a trial lawyer.
I’m a seventh-generation Georgia and an Atlanta native, so I knew I wanted to come back home. I went to the University of Georgia School of Law. At Georgia Law School, I was a member of the mock trial board which helps law students with trial advocacy. I was also a member of the moot court board which focuses on appellate arguments. During my final year of law school, I received the “William King Meadow Award.” Students and faculty vote to provide this award to “one student in the graduating class best-exemplifying integrity, responsibility, and high legal ethics, and who has the keen sense of humor necessary to bring a proper perspective to solving legal issues.” I still work to keep my sense of humor at all times and under all circumstances, which jurors, judges, and clients tend to like!
When I came out of law school in 2010, it was at the peak of the recession. Big law jobs (working for large law firms) were hard to come by, so I ended up going to work for a compact litigation firm founded in 1973 by Pitts Carr in Atlanta. A few years later, Pitts is now my law partner and we formed Carr & Weatherby, LLP. The most important thing for us is providing quality legal services to those that need it most, in the areas of catastrophic injury, truck accident, fatal accident, class action, and professional malpractice.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been some twists and turns. Having a law partner who is respected and experienced was a huge help for me when I was starting out. You’re often told that law school teaches you to “think like a lawyer” as opposed to knowing what the law says. This is definitely true.
It is not possible to know every law, claim or defense. When I started out as a lawyer, there was a learning curve for the court procedures, the discovery tools, and the law that governs my practice areas. That is why I’ve chosen to focus on just a few areas of the law, so I can really hone my skills and offer my clients the best representation under the circumstances.
One field that I am passionate about is catastrophic injuries and wrongful death. It is challenging for folks to take this field seriously at times, due to the number of lawyers flexing their muscles and promising a big payday. At the same time, there has been nothing more rewarding to me than getting a settlement for a really hurt client that changes their lives. The truth is: hurt people need good lawyers. I just want to provide high-quality representation in an honorable and charming way to folks who really need it.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Carr & Weatherby – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We make lives better with honor, efficiency, and effectiveness. We take a limited number of cases in the fields of catastrophic injury, truck accident, class action, and professional malpractice. This enables us to provide quality representation where folks speak with us, their lawyers, not an assistant.
We are a unique firm because we represent both plaintiffs and defendants. While there are many good attorneys who focus solely on representing one side, we practice on both sides of the aisle. Our clients are better for it. It helps in a few ways. It gives our client’s insight. It gives our client’s credibility. It gives our client’s perspective. We have represented some of the top companies in the world, and we have represented seriously injured folks. All our clients benefit from our experience.
In 2018, for example, we tried a fatal accident case that resulted in a verdict in excess of $27,000,000.00. This was one of the highest verdicts in Georgia in 2018. We’ve recovered millions more for our clients. We know how to try cases. Often, we are helping clients who have suffered a life-changing injury or who have lost a loved one. It is serious business, and it requires strong representation. To do this, we focus on what will make our clients’ lives better, and work as hard as we can to achieve that goal.
We work to give back. My law partner and I work with nonprofits to support communities. Our firm offers a scholarship for At-Risk Youth. Persons without stable homes in Atlanta are a point of emphasis in our community outreach.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
As an Atlanta native, I love our city. I enjoy the diverse community, the neighborhoods, the restaurants, the parks. I enjoy spending time in the public areas of the city, taking our kids to a splash pad or for a walk on the BeltLine. The traffic could use some fixing though!
The City and State would due well to invest in comprehensive public transportation reform. MARTA does the best it can with what it is given. At the same time, we need more connection from the rail-lines to our neighborhoods. I would love to see an Atlanta where it is easier to bike, walk, and ride than it is to drive. I think we can get there. We need strong leadership, a bold vision, and a motivated voting block!
(Ok. Stepping off my soapbox now.)
