Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Moore.
Alexis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in Huntsville, Alabama and I developed a love for photography early on in middle school. I would carry a disposable fuji film camera with me everywhere I went. After a while, my parents recognized the love I had for photography and invested in getting me some real equipment. I taught myself the basics over time, picked up tips from mentors and studied the work of some of my greatest inspirations. I did dozens of sessions for graduating seniors on my university’s campus and that’s really what got me moving in the right direction. Now here I am, nearly fifteen years later, with the same passion for visual arts that I had as a young girl. I just recently relocated to Atlanta and officially launched my photography business. I’m so excited be here and to see where God takes me on the next phase of this journey.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As an artist, I don’t think it’s ever really a smooth road. It takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there, especially when you are providing a service and your clients have certain expectations. Art can be intimidating. Although I had been shooting for years, I never had any formal education in this field, so while I was earning my undergraduate degree, I decided to take a photography class as an elective. The professor of this class was committed to making me feel as though my work was inadequate. If what I was presenting didn’t fit his vision, it was deeply criticized and often times dismissed. I barely passed the class and for a while, the negative feedback from that professor tried to set the tone for how I viewed my work.
The power of influence is so real and it’s important to be secure in what you do and the gifts you know you’ve been given because there will always be someone who is intimidated by what you have to offer. Thankfully, the consistent support that I received from people that truly appreciated my work gave me the motivation I needed to keep going.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am the lead photographer at Alexis Moore Photo and I specialize in natural light portrait photography. I shoot a great deal of engagement photos, maternity sessions, senior portraits and I just recently added wedding photography to my skill set. I’m most known for my portraiture and I believe that my ability to connect with my clients sets me apart from others. I truly value engaging with my clients and making our interactions personal in order to provide a more personal result in the art we create.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I’d say that I was always a little eclectic. I was a very creative and curious child. I was incredibly friendly, but I appreciated my time alone, and I still do. I loved to read, sing and of course, take photos. I remember during the time that “MySpace” was really popular, I would do a lot of layout coding and photoshoots for my friends to add more creative content to their profiles. I was always the kid who was willing to help and I guess you could say that not much has changed.
