Meet Alexis Wilborn of Lexwork Fitness in Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Wilborn.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my fitness journey back in 2007 by completing my first half marathon. I was able to lose those “freshman fifty” and keep the weight off for several years. However, in January 2009, my husband and I lost our twin girls. Shortly after their passing, I became pregnant, with our now nine-year-old son. During that pregnancy, I gained a lot of extra weight. Due to the fact that I didn’t want to risk miscarrying my son, I did not work out the entire time of that pregnancy. Also, during the pregnancy with my son, I fractured my ankle and was placed on bed rest. After having our son, I found Ashley Horner’s fitness programs and started running with Black Girls Run. It took an entire year, but I was determined and dropped 100 pounds. Once I became confident in my own fitness journey, I wanted to help others. That was the motivation to become certified in cycling, group fitness, and a certified personal trainer. Currently, I am losing weight again after having my daughter, who is now 18 months old. I’m a firm believer that many give up right before they can see the change happen. I wanted to empower other women to know that no matter what obstacles are thrown your way, you can still make small changes that pay off big.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, the road seemed smoother. However, on March 28, 2014, I was hospitalized and diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I lost vision in one eye and had to be hospitalized and placed on steroids to reduce the inflammation of my optic nerve. Even with the diagnosis, my best ally was my healthy lifestyle. The years leading up to the diagnosis, I was living a healthy lifestyle, but overloaded my schedule and was stressed. I’m a holistic person so I decided to take a different approach with my plan of care. I see my neurologist once a year and I also listen to my body. I stay away from things that aren’t good for my central nervous system, like alcohol, and I try my best to eat healthily. I do have a sweet tooth, so I have to keep that under control and everything is fine.

Lexwork Fitness – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is relatively new and I specialize in health and wellness. I am personally known for being a motivator and encourager; I try to bring that to the fitness community as well. I’m most proud of starting my company after so many years of being told that I should but never acting on it. What sets my company apart from others is that I’ve been overweight, more than once, and understand the struggle with keeping the weight off. Also, I have an autoimmune disorder, so I understand the complexities of knowing that each person has a different journey and different obstacles to overcome. I’m very transparent about my story because I want people to know that you should never let the “bad parts” or “undesirable” parts of your story become your excuse. I could have easily stopped working out or let different tragedies let me give up on myself.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far is just the amount of support I have received from family, friends, and even strangers. I love to motivate other people to become their best self, but I don’t like or need recognition. I love being able to help someone see the potential they have always had within themselves.
