Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Martin.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As long as I can remember, I enjoyed making things; dollhouse furnishings, paintings, miniatures, needlework, and sketches. I started Ward and Company as a family business to create beautiful items that bring joy to people. My sister, daughter and I come up with ideas for new products. We share colors and designs, we discover, that excite us and then we work to make them come to life. We are a new company and have enjoyed the process of discovering who we are and what we believe in. Whether it is a commissioned print, wedding invitations or 100’s of hand addressed envelopes we want each one to be beautiful and special.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There is so much to learn when starting a new business. We are all teachers and are confident in our abilities to teach others something new. Leaving the teaching world where I am confident and successful, to step into a business world where everything depends on the decisions I make, is stressful. While we knew how to create products, we knew little about marketing, sales, bookkeeping, and taxes; all the things that keep a business running and growing.
Please tell us about Ward and Company.
Ward and Company specializes is making beautiful personalized artwork. Our clients are discerning and appreciate the unique beauty of watercolor paint and hand-lettered script. Each piece is designed and made with the customer in mind.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was a child, my mom and grandmother would get together and make clothes for my sister and myself. I loved watching them take fabric, buttons, and thread and make something beautiful just for us. My favorite design was a poncho with ball fringe. The adorable fringe would fan out as I swirled around in the yard. It made me feel so special. I wore it everywhere, even when I was climbing trees.
We created Ward and Company with the hope to bring that special feeling to our customers.
