Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Johnson.
Amber, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As far as I can remember, I’ve always loved makeup. Like many young girls, I would take my mother’s lipstick from her purse when she wasn’t looking, and with an unsteady hand, apply it to my lips. I would run to her smiling, thinking I looked beautiful, when actually, I had smothered the lipstick all over myself, resembling a clown. Years later, in high school, I discovered makeup videos on YouTube. This discovery changed my life. I would watch makeup tutorials for hours on end and would practice on myself as they went along. As the years have passed, I have gone from only knowing how to do natural looks, to now being able to have full creative control.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For a while, I didn’t take a career in makeup seriously because I knew too many people who were in that field, and I didn’t want to be like everyone else and do the same thing. It wasn’t until I saw a post on social media that said, “When you go into the grocery store, go down any aisle, and you will see multiple million-dollar companies selling the same product.” These companies didn’t care that someone else was selling the same thing, because they knew that they could do the same, or even better. Having that mindset, plus discipline, ambition, and perseverance will be my guiding light to success.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I offer beauty enhancement services through the art of makeup. Since most of my clients ask for natural or soft makeup, I specialize in that. However, I am known for doing over-the-top looks on myself. In December of 2019, I challenged myself to do Christmas themed looks for 25 days, and by stepping out of my comfort zone, I shocked everyone, even myself, with the level of artistry I executed.
There are many aspects of my business that make me proud, but once, when I did a young lady’s makeup, she cried tears of joy when she saw the finished product. You never know how someone’s day has been or what they are going through in life, but I am most proud of the happiness I bring others when they see their natural beauty enhanced beyond what they could’ve ever imagined. In any career field or industry, it is common for people to only work within their comfort zone. My passion for makeup has created an environment for myself, where I am not afraid to challenge, critique, and change my craft.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being passionate about your career or business guides you to success. If you love what you do, doing your best is second nature. However, if you’re miserable in your job, you’re less likely to go the extra mile and put forth your best effort. I am very passionate about makeup artistry, and it shows through my dedication and hard work. The amount of passion I have towards my craft equips me with the perfect template to be successful.
