Meet Amber Watson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Watson.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve always had an affinity for storytelling, but I didn’t embrace the art of visual storytelling until after completing my journalism degree at The University of Tennessee and spending some time in a Knoxville newsroom.

When I became a mom, I turned my creative attention to documenting my family’s everyday moments; but after receiving my first invitation to document a birth, I knew I was meant to serve other families. In the time since, my passion for visual storytelling has been strengthened by the families who invite me to help document their birth stories.

Please tell us about your art.
I specialize in birth photography, highlighting the strength and beauty of one of life’s most incredible events. Families invite me into the birth space – be it a home, hospital or birth center – to document and celebrate their child’s entrance into the world. It’s a humbling privilege that I never take for granted. Before the birth of my first child, I was scared and dreaded everything that was about to happen to my body. My fears, however, were completely unfounded, and that birth was a wonderful experience of which I wish I had photos. Fast forward seven years and my ideas about birth have come full circle from those months leading up to my first birth experience. I’ve learned that it doesn’t have to include fear or anxiety, and I hope my work encourages families approaching the birth of a child. I would also love for my work to spark conversations about birth choices. Birth is an intimately personal experience that’s not ‘one size fits all.’ By celebrating informed decision making, free from judgment, I hope all women go into their birth experience knowledgeable, calm and confident.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
In many ways, I think it’s easier than ever for artists to share their work and make connections with other creatives. Environments where artists can come together to support one another, share ideas and learn from each other will encourage growth and help artists thrive. Connecting with other creatives has been extremely beneficial for me personally, and I think all artists can benefit from a supportive, creative community.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Because birth is such a deeply personal and intimate event, I’m only able to share a portion of my birth work. I feature the stories I’m so graciously permitted to share on my blog at www.amwportfolio.com and social media channels at www.instagram.com/ambermwatson and www.facebook.com/amwportfolio.
