Meet Ananda Palmore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ananda Palmore.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ananda. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a child, I indulged in many hobbies and activities. From Figure Skating to Gymnastics, I was always interested in mastering the next new skill. As I would typically engage in the annual Christmas and school plays, it was not until age 14, was when I decided to tap into acting more seriously. My parents, who always supported my interests, enrolled me in acting classes, and to my surprise, acting has become a part of who I am. I like to say “acting saved my life” as it was (and is ) a consistent outlet for my life experiences; both positive and negative. I applied and got accepted into Spelman College, in which I’ve decided to major in English and minor in theatre performance, simultaneously pursuing my acting career. I am currently in my junior year at Spelman and have few projects coming up as far as my career. My passion is not just acting but the entertainment industry in general; I am studying how exactly the industry represents marginalized communities and how it affects societal acceptance and ideologies. As I continue my career, I plan on finding the flaws within the industry and fixing them one exceptional project/ role at a time. I represent multiple marginalized communities and I understand my responsibility for that. My goal is to inspire people in general (especially) young black and brown girls and show them that they are more than what society has made of them.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not always been easy, as I do battle sickle cell anemia, a blood condition which has the capability of hospitalizing me for months on in, as it can become life-threatening. My whole life sickle cell has kept me out of school, forcing me to play catch up alot of times. Sickle Cell has also affected me mentally and emotionally as I have sometimes felt isolated with other young people my age. Honestly, I have gone into a sickle cell crisis trying to finish up an acting project. Many would say that it sucks living with such a condition, but I strongly believe that it has become a strength more than a weakness. I have asked, “Why me?” so many times but there is a reason why I have it and I really should not be here but I am. I worry of the times sickle cell will affect my acting career but I refuse. I have started my awareness in my school community and if you follow me on Instagram, you will see my advocacy for sickle cell awareness as it is one of the most underfunded diseases for research. I have prevailed, as I am not even supposed to be in the position I am today. I thank God and my support system of friends and family.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am most proud of my resilience and hard work. What sets me apart is my willingness to become vulnerable and share my journey.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes ! I just recently finished up a project that I can not wait to be released…

While I have accomplished many of my career goals in which I could be proud of; my proudest moment was when I came to terms with the fact that my journey is mine and no one else’s. Everything I aspire towards is already mine and will come in its own perfect timing.
