Meet Anne Harkness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Harkness.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
A native of Charlotte, NC, Anne Harkness is an alumnus of the Atlanta College of Art and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from The Maryland Institute, College of Art. Her work as an art director in NYC for 15 years has embodied her work with a graphic element that astute viewers can detect in her paintings. As a contemporary artist, Anne seeks to capture a distinct point of view, often finding some unexpected beauty in locations or views others would easily dismiss as ordinary, or too unattractive to be considered as the subject matter for artistic compositions.

Please tell us about your art.
Working from her love of subject matter with a strong design element, Harkness also focuses on the importance of line and shape in her work as a means of giving her compositions a strong foundation to “reveal the many layers [within each] piece.” Anne credits her emphasis on these particular components to her love of drawing and a desire “to [retain] the looser marks that give a piece a more rustic, unfinished quality.” Anne also looks for the surprises that come from spending time in a painting. These discoveries are the treasures she cherishes.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
Throughout history artists have seemed unimportant or undervalued by much of present day society. But in fact, they hold the pulse of the world. My work often notes the changes in technology that surround us; ie. telephone poles, surveillance cameras, wires, car designs, cell phones, traffic lights etc.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
