Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Malik.
Anthony, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I initially aspired to become a real estate investment analyst. I incidentally entered the field as a real estate tax analyst. Thereafter I was constantly in awe and wonderment of the complexity of the tax law and eventually decided to specialize in this area.
Fortuitously, I went on to work for two of Atlanta’s top CPA and law firms where I developed a very powerful skillset in international taxation. I eventually founded, Point Square Consulting, where we focus on tax planning, tax return preparation, and OVDP representation for both individuals and businesses.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While “smooth” is a relative term, I will take the liberty to say that I would not exactly describe my professional journey as such.
International tax law is wondrously complex.
This is indicative of the fact that very few tax professionals are willing to dedicate the time and effort necessary to become truly good in this field. So the struggle was one of sacrificing a tremendous amount of leisure time over the course of a decade to reach the top levels of practice.
International tax practice is a serious professional endeavor and like anything worth doing, it has presented me with numerous challenges along the way.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Point Square Consulting – what should we know?
We are one of the very few small tax firms that offer top-tier international tax services to both individuals and businesses.
International businesses and cross-border families routinely turn to us for services such as tax return preparation, global tax minimization planning, opinion letters, and OVDP representation.
I am, perhaps, most proud that we’ve earned the reputation of being one of the best international tax firms in the country. We now regularly receive referrals from CPA and law firms all over the country. These firms refer us work because while these firms may have excellent domestic tax professionals, they may not necessarily have any international tax specialists on staff. So when their existing clients begin expanding business activities overseas, they usually are no longer capable of serving them.
Moreover, these firms gladly refer us work because they are well aware of the quality of our services.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
While I’m tempted to go down a long list of qualities, including discipline, organization, logic, and creativity, I must say that the single most important quality is loving what we do. Personally speaking, I am very passionate about my work. Whether it’s developing a strategy to resolve a taxpayer’s international tax problems with the IRS or preparing a tax planning technique for a transaction, I am constantly wired. Even tax returns, generally considered stupefying, become quite interesting when you begin understanding the underpinning legalities to things such as foreign investments, paying foreign workers, and cross-border business loan agreements. It’s absolutely imperative for service professionals to love and appreciate their work.
