Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Terrell.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At a very young age, I realized I was a very creative person. I was fascinated with anything arts and craft like. I loved to build things, create things, recreate things, etc. When it came to designing, I never saw myself doing it, it kind of just happened.
In 2011, I was very into bow ties and taught myself how to create a no sew bow tie so I could wear them. I then would be asked to make some for others and before I knew it, I had a very small bow tie business. In 2012, my great grandmother gave me a sewing machine and suggested I learn how to use it. I put it in the closet and never touched it. In 2013, after she passed away I decided to pull it out and play around on it. I started to teach myself how to sew and then it became a hobby. I would sew little things for myself and wear them without telling anyone I made it. I moved to Atlanta in 2015 and connected with a few individuals that so happen to be stylist.
For a couple of years, I never mentioned to them that I knew how to sew until one day my friend was in a bind and really needed alterations done for a client and I offered to do it. From there he started asking me to help more often. He then started asking me to make things for his clients. From there I started to get noticed by others and my clientele started to grow. Last year, I came up with a name for my brand and decided to just go for it. So here I am, the proud owner of Antonio Terrell Designs!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This journey has not been a very smooth ride. Sometimes it is still a struggle. It was all just a hobby to me, so turning it into a business has been a little challenging. I looked at so many others doing what I do and compared myself to them, their craftsmanship, the amount of time they’ve been in it, etc. I doubted myself at first, wondering if I was good enough. I’ve messed up a few garments, made a few bad business decisions, got overwhelmed, cried, etc., but at the end of the day enjoy what I day. I take all of my experiences and just continue to learn and grow from them.
Please tell us about Antonio Terrell Designs.
What I do is work with individuals to create custom pieces and looks, that helps them look good and feel good.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I’ve learned many lessons throughout this journey, but the main lesson learned is that no matter what keep going and never give up.
