Meet Ash Cash Exantus of MindRight Money Management in Downtown Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ash Cash Exantus.

Ash Cash, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born and raised in a single-parent home in the St. Nicholas public housing development in Harlem NYC during an era filled with drugs and high crime. I became an entrepreneur at the early age of eight, packing grocery bags at the local supermarket, then graduating by age twelve to selling mixtapes and t-shirts on the famous 125th street as a street vendor.

I had my share of mischief and near run-ins with the law but managed to escape unscathed thanks to my Basketball coaches, teachers, OG’s, and family members (mainly my sister Roz) who did their best to keep me off of the streets.

I started my career as a teller at the age of nineteen & worked my way up to several promotions & at the tender age of twenty-four, I became a VP at one of the largest banks in the country.

I “not so humbly” retired from banking on my 30th birthday to become an author, speaker, & financial literacy advocate. Not fully prepared for entrepreneurship, I found myself back in the workforce within a year due to unforeseen family emergencies & financial hardships. This would become my biggest lesson in life.

This lesson quickly became a blessing when I was asked to manage a new credit union in Queensbridge houses; the largest public housing development in the U.S. At age thirty-two, I became one of the youngest CEO’s of a federally chartered bank.

After a few years, I decided to leave retail banking again, but this time to focus on teaching financial education and money management nationally. After years of speaking on the college circuit and at national conferences, I noticed that there was a disconnect between those who taught financial literacy and those who needed to learn it. With that in mind, I created MindRight Money Management, a financial education company.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggle early on was trying to adjust from the corporate world, where you received a paycheck on a consistent basis to entrepreneurship, where you don’t necessarily know where your next deal is going to come from. This was because I went into entrepreneurship with the same corporate mindset that said, “I will exchange time for money.” Eventually, I had to figure out that I needed to change my relationship with money; Instead of working hard for money, the money needed to work hard for me. Entrepreneurs MUST learn how to create passive and multiple streams of income.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about MindRight Money Management – what should we know?
MindRight Money Management® is a financial education company that blends psychology and personal finance with music, pop culture and relevant news to help people manage their money better in order to live the life that they want.

Through workshops, seminars, money-management books, articles, online courses, and audio/video programs; we help reeducate people on how to properly use and grow money. We also offer spokesperson and custom financial education programs that can be branded or private-labeled for use on any website, micro-site, blog, mobile app, or newsletter.

What sets us apart from others is that we meet our clients where they are opposed to trying to speak to them from where we think they should be. We seek to understand before we aim to be understood. This approach coupled with our use of culturally relevant topics makes our work effective.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
God, my mother for her unwavering belief in me, Basketball coaches, teachers, OG’s, and my sister Roz who got me my first job in an effort to stop me from selling drugs. My first manager at Blockbuster videos, (Edwin Cintron) who helped me realize that I was a good salesperson, my first branch manager, Micheal Black who showed me what being a professional man looked like. All the magazines and websites that took a chance on me as a writer, and all of my clients, readers, and social media followers who help me spread the word of being fiscally responsible.
