Meet Ashley Dorough of House of Dorough

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Dorough.

Ashley, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my career working in Costumes in film and TV. I worked my way up from a Costume Production Assistant to an Assistant Costume Designer. I did this for 8 years, and decided to blog full time this year and be at home with my daughter.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working in the film industry is not easy – 14-16 hour days, 5 days a week. It was definitely a struggle breaking in to the industry. I would literally work until midnight for free if it meant my boss would respect me more.

Please tell us about House of Dorough.
Now I run my own blog, called House of Dorough. My main mission is to reach and empower women of all shapes and sizes. Beauty starts on the inside, with confidence and self-love. It’s a hard goal to maintain, but I truly believe that if we all keep encouraging and empowering each other, we can change the world. I enjoy being a voice for the average size 16 woman, but I also love encouraging women who are a size 0. My background in costume designing means I’ve worked with people of all shapes and sizes and have an eye for dressing them. I absolutely love giving people a sense of confidence they haven’t felt before with clothing, because it affects them on the inside.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Playing dress-up and going shopping with my mom. Is that totally insane?! Ha…
