Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Manning.
Ashley, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I come from a line of educators and indigenous healers. I would spend most of my time with my Elisi and her sisters soaking up whatever knowledge I could or reading medical books of cousins who were in various stages of their nursing careers. I found myself being the “therapist” to my peers as well so psychology or social work seemed like a natural fit.
While on active duty I started my classes in pursuit of a Psychology Degree with the hopes of becoming a Naval Officer. Aside from Psychology, I also liked nutrition science. I began researching nutrition at a deeper level upon having my first child, I fell in love with it. My dreams of becoming a Naval Officer were dashed when I was medically retired from active duty. I was devastated! I took a break from my studies to decompress and be a mom. Being medically retired meant medication which I loathed so whenever possible I would find an alternative to what my doctor recommended. My friends and family noticed my remedies working, they started taking heed to my advice, but my dad was a tough customer. He was the big reason I switched from Psychology to Nutrition Science and to put the icing on the cake, I graduated Summa Cum Laude. The pathway to become a Registered Dietitian was tempting; however, my calling was in holistic health. I graduated happily from Energetic Health Institute with a wealth of knowledge and skills to assist others on their journey to wellness.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Yes and no. Helping others, mothering, being a light, caring, wanting the best for everyone is who I am. Having PTSD and working through everything that comes with the diagnosis has been a challenge. I get through by using my resources and applying the same principles I share with others.
Please tell us about your work.
