Meet Ashley McArthur

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley McArthur.

Ashley, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a filmmaker based in Atlanta, GA. I graduated from Georgia Southern University with a BS with a concentration in film. I knew writing, directing and producing was for me at a very young age. I produced, directed and wrote a few shorts, plays, had a few scripts optioned but most recently been working on a web series entitled, “Side Chick” since 2016 and we’re currently in our 3rd season.

The journey hasn’t been easy. As creators, we all know, “everyone doesn’t believe in you” so you have to believe in yourself. I had to rely on my God-given talent, skill and drive to make this series happen. I worked a 9-5 so I had to figure out how to organize my time and make it happen. The great thing about my job was being able to use what money I earned to help fund the series. Yes, I had to fund my own project and filming with a shoestring budget was extremely difficult but rewarding.

How did I pull off completing two seasons? The support of friends and family went a long way. However, the support, discipline and hard work of the cast and crew was everything. They were equally dedicated, humble and driven. Not only did they perform and/or do their job, but they also went over and beyond and assisted in areas where there was a need. I couldn’t have asked for a better team, family!

Overall, it’s my passion that ignited my drive and I’ve been creating with a smile.

Has it been a smooth road?
The journey hasn’t been easy at all. Funding a project with your own money is extremely difficult. There are times where you eat and times when you don’t. As a creator, I wanted so much but was challenged to be creative with very little.

Scheduling was also a difficult task. Everyone on the project still had/has other priorities and obligations they too have to fulfill. Finding a balance to accommodate everyone and meet a deadline can be stressful at times if you’re not careful.

Other than that, it’s pretty cool hahahahahaha!!!!

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a filmmaker/storyteller based in Atlanta. I write, I direct and produce film projects, tv shows, web series and more. I also provide video production services capturing live events, creating business promos, basically anything that allows me to tell a story.

Currently, I’m recognized for my web series “Side Chick,” which I started in 2016. Essence named us 1 of 7 Best Web Series in 2016 that changed the game. I recently entered a licensing agreement with iOne Digital, which is the leading digital media company that creates and distributes premium content for Urban Enthusiasts. We’re excited about this new journey and understand the sky is the limit.

We’re currently in production of season 3.

As for the video production side, I have a few summer projects lined up for some high profile clients. I’m a traveling videographer that tells stories for influencers, business owners, etc. Word of mouth has always been my best source for business, but I am on social media.

The one thing I believe that sets me apart as a filmmaker from others is the environment in which I create for others (actors/crew) to feel safe to make mistakes, grow and be treated as beautiful human beings. I feel that the industry is afraid to bring love back in the equation when in fact, it’s the love that makes the whole process beautiful. Our cast and crew are like a family. When we get together, it’s like a family reunion. We cry, pray, laugh, and support one another beyond this project.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is the place. Yes, thee, especially for people of color. There’s so much opportunity here. You can literally bump into a filmmaker, music producer, rapper, photographer, fashion stylist, and writer all in one coffee shop LOL. Ok, yes that’s a bit much, but look it’s real. Everyone in Atlanta is doing something, whether they’re good at it or not.

I would highly recommend Atlanta as a place to start and grow. So many people are hungry for success and jobs are created daily. However, whether you start off in New York (Brooklyn stand up), Atlanta or Cali, everyone’s experience will be different. I feel as long as you have a plan with flexibility and a passion, you’re off to a great start.
