Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Mize.
Amber, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have had a passion for art since grade school. At the tender age of thirteen, my parents bought my first computer and that was all she wrote. I was instantly drawn to graphic art, web design, etc.
I started coding when MySpace was popular, I was doing my own artwork by then as well. For my 14th birthday, my dad bought my first domain name, Always-Amber dot com. Graphic art started as a hobby and 10 years later turned into a business.
Has it been a smooth road?
Is anything we WANT out of life easy? Of course, there have been obstacles, lack of motivation, nights spent with my nose in my computer until three a.m. and still unable to produce the work. But for me, it has been worth it.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It’s hard to say what has made me the proudest thus far because I’m extremely proud of myself altogether; I took something that started as a hobby at a young age and turned it into a business, that itself makes me proud of myself.
Tell us more about the struggles you’ve faced along the way.
I struggle most days I sit in front of the computer and start a new design. My most creative ideas come after midnight, it seems, so I struggle with the hours, staying up late and having to get up early for my full-time job.
I struggle when people come to me with an undeveloped idea, like hey, can you create something for my business, in the vaguest sense ever. I’d like a silhouette, with more detail, what an oxymoron, right? Communication is everything in this business and if I’m not getting that from a client, the work may not be produced.
What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
I moved to Atlanta from Athens, Ga, where little to no one thrives inside of the city’s walls. Moving to Atlanta was the best move for my business, ever, but it didn’t just come overnight. In a city like Atlanta, you definitely have to get out, do some networking, and just use your time to your advantage. Atlanta is a great place for young entrepreneurs.
