Meet Avis Woods of AvisNicole Design in Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Avis Woods.

Avis, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a child I always loved art and design. I would color for hours in my coloring books using various colored pencils and markers. I also enjoyed making my own arts and crafts projects using various random items found around the house or outside. I remember making a “sock snake” door stopper with random old socks found around the house.

During my time in high school, the internet started to blossom. I remember I had my first email account on AOL using dial up and it was incredibly slow! One day I found a random website for building customized website templates. That sparked my interest in art even more!

After high school, I enrolled in Winston Salem State University. I obtained my BA in Computer Graphics and was able to experience more hands-on types of art such as sculpture, animation, drawing and painting. I ended up graduating a semester early, with honors and wondered what was next. It was there that one of my art professors told me about Savannah College of Art and Design.

In the beginning, I was a bit skeptical about being that far away from home, but eventually I decided to take a family vacation to Savannah and Atlanta to tour both schools. I fell in love immediately and decided to apply at the Atlanta campus. I was accepted a couple of weeks before my birthday, that was the day my life changed forever. I had no clue what was in store for me down the road, but a couple of years later, I had earned my MA in Graphic Design from one of the top art schools in the world.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been an easy road. While at Savannah College of Art and Design I was pushed to the max like never before. Between buying expensive art supplies, developing strong concepts and a lot of sleepless nights, it was a difficult process. The school was open 24/7 so a lot of times my friends and I would stay all night and motivate each other. SCAD taught me a completely different thought process and that in of itself was a challenge. Upon graduating it was tough finding a job. It’s so competitive here in Atlanta with all of the art schools and employers looking for fascinating designers.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about AvisNicole Design – what should we know?
A few years ago I developed AvisNicole Design. Most of my work is print based ranging from branding to packaging. I enjoy working with various clients on their individual needs. I am known for fast turn arounds and I provide various concepts for the clients to choose from.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Hard work is the main quality that has gotten me to where I am today. Although there have been times I wanted to quit, I never did and I continued to push forward.
