Meet Becky Mai Sotillo of Dove Heart Studio in Alpharetta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Mai Sotillo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Becky Mai. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always had a passion for art and my mother surrounded me in certain crafts of the beauty industry growing up. Therefore, it’s no surprise that I would choose a similar path when picking a career to pursue. Graduating from beauty school was the beginning of a journey that I have yet to fully live through. After the first 10 years in the industry mainly as a hairstylist, I ventured on my own to start my solo project…Dove Heart Studio. Though I’ve enjoyed many years of working alongside talented hair artists, there’s something profound to me when working in solitude. In my private studio, I spend one on one time getting to know my clients…not just doing great hair on them but relationship building as well. I am grateful for where this journey has taken me so far and with Dove Heart Studio I practice my craft with contentment. All Glory to God.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing good or great ever comes easy…and if it does…it’s not easily appreciated. I was confined by fear and found every reason not to have my own salon. I was so scared of failing that I was willing to give up on a chance to succeed. My husband gave me much words of encouragement and with his encouraging nudge I made a leap of faith to startup Dove Heart Studio. The toughest times had to be at the beginning of my “one-person show”. Although I had much support in the home, in the studio I had to figure out all aspects of running a hair salon. The startup to-do list seemed endless and overwhelming. On top of the realization of all that goes into entrepreneurship, there is the stressful thought of “will my clients follow me?”. I think most people in business can look back at when they first started and really appreciate how far they have come.

Dove Heart Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Dove Heart Studio is a private loft offering hair services. I offer haircuts, hair coloring, highlighting, lowlighting, smoothing treatments, hairdos for formal events, and some clients come see me specifically for hair extensions. I am most proud of the relationships I have built with my clientele. I have learned it is important to treat my clients professionally as well as lovingly like a friend. Clients come see me because I am a professional, so, therefore, professionalism is important. Having a comfortable atmosphere is also what I want to give my clients as well. By developing a relationship with my clients it creates that comforting feel when they visit my studio.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is defined as an accomplishment of a purpose. Success is conquering whatever purpose you are aiming for. Success is basically accomplishing a goal or goals you have set for yourself. No one is ever completely successful, once a set of goals are met, new ones are set and the MAIN goal is to continue succeeding. Failure, it’s only the learning process in succeeding. You fall, not to stay on the ground, but to stand up again and do it over, only this time wiser. Failing to succeed is nothing but a trial and error process, a system of guess and check until we come up with a theory that works. It’s only TRUE failure when you quit trying.

“Who are the Jones’ and why are we keeping up with them?” Throughout life experiences and through my journey in the beauty industry I have learned that we set standards for ourselves only to prove something to someone else. There is absolutely nothing wrong with dreaming big and reaching for the stars…but do it because you want to and because you choose to. It’s easy to get caught up in society’s criteria that you end up chasing someone else’s dream and reaching for someone else’s stars. If we isolate ourselves from what others may think, we’re usually content with what we have and what we are doing.

Becky gives my hair a great cut that compliments my face shape and hair type. She adds just the right amount of highlights to give me a glow without over-processing. I will say that I feel younger with the smart cut and stylish hairstyle that she consistently gives me. With my challenging hair thinning, the style is bouncy and fresh. Best of all, Becky is a real sweetheart and I love spending time with her. She’s all heart!

Thank you so very much Kim. Although it was over unfortunate circumstances that I began doing your hair…BUT I am so fortunate to have you as a client. It’s been great playing app games and swapping recipes! Also, compliments to your for not being afraid and switching up your color and hairstyles. Once again, thank you.

Mike, I’m grateful for your words of kindness. Even being miles and miles away, you still manage to show your support. I haven’t forgot the fun times of sharing Christian bands, artists and songs with each other. Thank you Michael.
