Today we’d like to introduce you to Beliria Sims.
Beliria, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
After undergrad, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was waiting tables, and I had a family who would always request me. One day the dad came in alone and requested me as usual. He asked me if I ever thought about acting. Of course, I was looking at him crazy thinking “are you really in here without your wife asking me if I ever considered “acting”?” I told him as a kid I’d always wanted to be a singer, an actress, and a model but through the years, I listened to other people and allowed their ideas of a “plan B” to deter me. He suggested I come with him to a networking event for the independent film industry and I took the bait. We ended up at a networking event the next week. I met a girl there who directed me to my very first acting coach, and I haven’t let go of the art since.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m an acting artist. I’m an actor because I can’t imagine doing anything else in the entire world. I’m an actor because there are SO many things I’d like to do and experience so this gives me exactly that opportunity. I am purposed to tell stories/ reflect/ and represent real people and their real lives, events, and circumstances etc. My purpose is to move people closer to God, closer to themselves, closer to love. I want people to realize whatever they need to to make them better versions of themselves and somehow find the courage to get it. To do it. I want them to be entertained. Filled with whatever is necessary to get them closer to God, themselves, and love.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I don’t think the role of an artist has changed at all. As artists, we reflect life as we see it. As some see it. Even as it could be seen. In fact, given all that’s happening on the world, today I think every artist’s work could be informed by these events. We could all be crazy inspired based on how we choose to look at these situations. However I can’t say they drive my focus. If there’s a current issue that I’m particularly more passionate about, of course it will have my attention more than something else, and it can drive my focus. I guess it’s just situational.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I have a project I worked on called David Makes man coming out this summer. This August will be the third showing of MENTAL, a one woman show I’m starring in about a woman’s journey dealing with depression and anxiety. I have a few other projects coming out this year as well, and I’m sure there will be more. You can follow my instagram for details and updates. Someone could also start a gofundme for everything career/art related. Lol 😂 jk.
