Today we’d like to introduce you to Belloh Julius.
Belloh, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa and at the age of 12, my family and I migrated to the United States due to the civil war. Growing up I always had an undeniable artistic ability and as a junior in high school I was certain I wanted to go to art school but was challenged with how to tell my family this plan as this would be viewed as an unacceptable career path in my culture. One day my family asked me, what I wanted to go to college for; I knew this was my moment to just tell them. As nervous as I was, I stood up and said I want to be an interior designer. As expected, that did not go well with my grandmother, but the one person I was surprised to know supported my idea was my mother, she told me if that made me happy I should go for it. That was the moment I needed. I went to art school and the rest is history. I am now a mother of two beautiful boys and have a partner who is very supportive of my dreams. I am looking forward to becoming a household name as a designer.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Some of my struggles when I first started was gaining the trust of clients as I didn’t complete art school and most of my knowledge is based in practice and independent learning. Not even my family would trust me with a small bathroom in their homes. I often questioned whether or not I could make this happen as I had no portfolio to showcase my work; it’s like building credit with a lender when you have no credit history to base your worthiness on. Even though doubt crept in, I overcame it by utilizing my social media platform with DIY projects done in my own little apartment and that was how I began to establish trust and showcase my work.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Space2space Decor – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Space2space is an interior decorating company that specializes in home decor, industrial decor, home staging and a little bit of event planning. We are known for our wall decor from wallpaper, paintings and texturing techniques. I am so proud of our growth and progress. Our next venture is a line decorative pillows launching on January 30, 2020. My teammate Lauren Williams will agree with me when I say, Our company is different from others because we create spaces that are livable, comfortable, simple yet chic, modern and most importantly always tailored to your budget.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love most about Atlanta is the diversity. The ability to meet someone who is in the same industry as myself but has a different perspective, vision and style of decor. My least favorite would be the decor and design industry is not as big as NYC, LA or Miami. I believe because we are a growing city and growing rapidly, we’re going to be the next big market and that excites me.
