Meet Bernetta Knighten of The Knighten Project

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bernetta Knighten.

Bernetta, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Over the years I would watch shows like Oprah, Ellen and Steve Harvey change people lives by paying off their debt, giving them the vacation of their dreams or just doing something totally unexpected. I would get chills and it was because I wanted to do the same thing.

I wanted to change lives for everyday people like myself. One day, while on maternity leave with my third child, I was watching Steve Harvey bless someone and thought what if there was an organization that only made dreams come true for deserving moms? What if I were the one to create it?

Because there was no other organization that did exactly what I wanted to do, I was afraid to start. I was afraid to create something that wasn’t created. Isn’t that crazy?! I would move forward two steps and stop. I would have another meeting to progress and then stop. There was actually a day I told my husband that I’m going to just stop dreaming. I literally told him, “I’m just going to be your wife and raise these kids!” I meant that. I was ready to give up.

On that following Sunday, my pastor called me out in church and said, “God said ‘Don’t stop dreaming! You are going to change lives, do not stop dreaming!” Three years after the original idea, The Knighten Project launched.

Over the years, we’ve made 3 major dreams come true and we’re working on our 4th dream. We’re raising money for a mom of 2 that hasn’t been able to purchase a car in 8 years. Can you even imagine? Donate here: https://www.gofundme.com/car4carlotta

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think when you have a business, a dream or just a goal – the road is hardly ever smooth. Our dreams look so grand and beautiful to us until it’s time to travel the road towards them. The thing is to keep moving forward. For me, I’ve had challenges where I didn’t always believe I was good at what I was doing or I didn’t know certain things (or people) to get me where I was.

Although I love to motivate others, there were days I needed to be pushed to keep going. I’ve struggled with knowing how to get to the next level. Who do I call, email, and/or reach out to? What do say to them when I do? Then somehow, it all comes together.

The Knighten Project – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Knighten Project is a non-profit organization that makes one big DREAM come true for everyday moms/wives.

Why? When I became a mom and started to meet other mothers (of all ages) I started to see and understand why so many moms sacrifice their dreams for their children and/or families. Some mothers give up their dreams altogether.

Many of these dreams are not realized because of the lack of hope, opportunity, and resources. My goal is to show mothers and wives that it’s ok to dream. When you make someone’s dream come true, you change their lives.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was when I appeared on the Steve Harvey talk show in 2017. I was in his Just One More Thing segment and he donated $5,000 to The Knighten Project to help me make more dreams come true.

That was a dream come true for me.
