Meet Bernice Bronson of Zena’s House in South Fulton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bernice Bronson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Bernice. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I moved on my desire to start a non-profit for youth shortly after my sister, Zena, passed away in 2002. Through the years, we have served hundreds of students through tutoring, workshops and exposure opportunities all while working a full-time job. Fourteen years later, I was able to leave my full-time job to work for Zena’s House full-time.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road to working for my non-profit has not been smooth. When I first created Zena’s House in 2004, I thought I would be able to secure enough funds to support our programs and my salary within the first few years of creating the organization. Boy, was I wrong! It takes time to seek and apply for grants and build relationships and partnerships. This was difficult because I could not devote the time I wanted to put in for Zena’s House.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Zena’s House story. Tell us more about it.
Zena’s House is a non-profit organization that provides tutoring, life-skills workshops and exposure opportunities for middle and high school students in metro Atlanta. I am most proud of two things. One, we were able to take 14 students and volunteers to Ghana, West Africa to expose, empower and educate. Second, we wrote and received a contract from GA Department of (GaDoE) to provide tutoring to middle school students in Fulton and Clayton County. We were awarded this contract in 2006 and again in 2009. Our program was well-received at the schools, with parents and GaDoE.

What sets us apart from others is our consistency over the years. Further, we stay current with the times to help meet the needs of our students.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Not sure I would call this luck but rather destiny and favor from God.
