Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Frey.
Bill, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
From my early days, I have always been outspoken and shown the ability to lead people. Many people say I was born with an entrepreneurial spirit and was destined to start a business. I have always felt that you could change the corporate environment more from the inside than the outside. I am a true believer that you never lose in life if you are learning. So, we can say I had a few learning moments on my way to finding my way into lighting. There have been many visions of what the future looks like and many adaptations to those visions which is what has brought me to where I am today.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Even the best paved roads become bumpy over time. There are always struggles. Some self-inflicted, some unavoidable. You must be able to adapt to grow as a company and even as an individual. The first major struggle we faced was in the mid 2000’s during the down market. We had to find ways to show value when cash was not readily available. It was a time to re-imagine how we worked with clients and to provide more value when many companies were solely focused on revenue to keep the doors open.
This change in our way of thinking allowed us to build solid relationships with clients which still serve as the base of our business. We have also seen changes across the industry. In the lighting world, we have seen unprecedented changes in technology. Advancing from incandescent lighting to LED then to RGB (controllable lighting). In the end, it is not the issues you face which will determine your success or failure but how you respond in the tough times.
Please tell us about your business.
Illuminating Design prides itself on being customer centric at the heart of all we do. If you take care of your customers they will take care of you. What we do is we create experiences worth repeating. Creating lighting displays is the end product but building relationships is at the heart of our everyday. We can create anything from static displays to fully programmed light shows. We have been able to build a one of a kind team who all play and produce together. The combination of backgrounds, personalities, skills, and vision allows us to see a project from many different angles which creates a unique perspective with amazing results. Together we create designs previously only seen in one’s mind.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There have been many proud moments through the years but those are only moments. I like to focus on the journey and the milestones we create. I take a lot of pride in watching team members being successful, growing as people, and reaching goals whether inside the company or on their own.
