Today we’d like to introduce you to BJ.
Thanks for sharing your story with us BJ. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always loved creating ever since I was in 2nd grade from what I can remember. I’d write poems with pictures to match and took tap dancing. However, it wasn’t until I was diagnosed with Alopecia, an autoimmune disease that can cause partial or total hair loss that I took creating to another level. I was devastated. I was wearing wigs and drawing on my eyebrows at 11 years old. So to feel normal, fashion became my go to! My mom would spend 100s on fashion such as crochet hats, scarfs, and wigs. I still danced and painted but now how I presented myself was major. However, as I grew older, I came to terms with the fact it masked by low self-esteem. Outsiders thought I had it together. That’s when I realized I wasn’t alone in this. So, I created Knotty Kulture a multipurpose styling/fashion line.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Whattt, naw, not even. It wasn’t even until I was adult that I actually began embracing my shiny, beautiful bald head. (shiny beautiful is example of my miracle and struggle) because I use to cry about it, run from it. Had the ugly cry and all lol. After diving into my spirituality and taking the advice of those who really loved me regardless if I had hair or not, I finally began to embrace what made me different, unique. This would then help heal others as it did me. Just a simple act of living my truth. Although it definitely didn’t seem simple at first. But in the words of Pharrell’s lemon song, the truth will set you free but first, it will piss you off.
Please tell us about Knotty Kulture.
My brand is called Knotty Kulture. Knotty derives from the Kulture of it being fashion and decor which often involves stitching, crocheting, and knotting. Knotty means more than that, a lot like Naughty but in the terms of that things that makes you different, rebellious …to society & making the statement of I DONT CARE. Inventory includes custom wigs, crochet fashion, and room decor. Each item is often personalized for the individual or a loved one as a gift or way to embrace individuality and/or a kulture.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I think my favorite memory was when my grandmother was tired of me wearing scarves that hid my face. So she took me to her hairstylist who made me a really cute wig. I felt a bit like a normal kid again. My grandma & peers were happy to see me this way, not hiding.
