Meet Brandon Redfern

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Redfern.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in a little town called Powder Springs outside Atlanta and even as a little guy I was always intrigued by all things artistic. At the age of 18 I hopped on my first-ever plane flight to go to school oversees in Sydney, Australia. I knew there was more the see and I wanted to see it! I studied worship and creative arts at Hillsong College where I met my wife Becca and then moved back to the states to begin our life together. That was over 7 years ago now and since then we have lived in a few different cities–but most recently moved back to Atlanta by way of Orlando, Fl. Currently I am on staff as the Creative Arts Director at Seven Springs Church. If life has taught me anything so far, it’s a book with many chapters and the next one is always better than the last. That’s where photography comes in… I have had the opportunity to try my hand at design, videography, web and other artistic mediums through the years, but getting behind the lens has always been a constant source of joy for me. As time goes on I fall more and more in love with it and it has become one of my greatest passions. I’m constantly trying to develop as a photographer and grow my personal photography business and most recently launched a wedding photography brand called Signet & Sparrow. My wife and I currently live in Smyrna with our little dog named Bailey…who’s got more personality than most humans I know.

Please tell us about your art.
I want to help people feel. Our world is so busy and fast paced and I want to create something that makes them stop. Stop and see. Stop and experience. If a picture is worth a thousand words, that just sounds limiting to me. Maybe our world doesn’t need more words. Maybe it needs to feel. Even answering these questions is hard because I am not a man of many words. I believe that if we all would talk less and watch more we would all see more clearly. That’s just who I am and how I experience the world and therefore how I express myself through the lens.

In my photography I strive to capture imagery of an emotive nature. I’m not just drawn towards something beautiful, but something evocative. I look for depth and ways to put people INTO the image as if are tasting it, hearing it, feeling it and seeing it all at the same time. I seek to appeal to all of their senses through depth, texture, lighting and composition.

I am inspired by the idea that every moment is a piece of art so the opportunities are limitless. A drop of water hits the ground and splashes and it will never hit the ground the same again. There are millions of photographers but even if we all capture the same drop; no image could ever be the same. That’s the beauty of photography. It’s always evolving, there’s always a new expression. So, I myself desire to continue evolving….

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success, for me, is about being able to sit back and say “it is good” and that is a tension point for me because I struggle with the constant push for “more”. Don’t we all?! haha

In that tension I believe is a key to success. Pushing for more and continuing to learn is essential to success in any area but especially art because nothing ever stays the same.
