Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Roberts.
Brandon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My first taste of participating in music was in the church choir as a child until I was about 13. I always loved old school gospel coming up as well which began with my late grandmother and grandfather’s church music group called the “Golden Harps.” The majority consisted of many talented family members that either played instruments or sing. I soaked a lot of that in coming up which I credit them for the soulful energy and sound of my music that I display. I did some writing in high school but I was so focused on being a successful baseball player which I went on to pursue in college. It was hard for me to sit down & think on what would work for me musically. Many people told me I could sing and to take advantage but I was timid and didn’t understand how to express myself musically at the moment instead of just letting it come naturally. That taught me a lesson because I learned that you have to jump into things without thinking so much. After all, we’re going to make mistakes and will not be the best starting out. Still, if you continue to focus and stay consistent, the results will eventually show if it’s meant for you.
I’ve always loved the emotions and feelings that music could bring and wanted to be apart of that. After dabbling in and out of recording, It was hard for me to find a sound because I wasn’t being myself. I really wanted to make a stamp on who I am and I felt like music could be that for me. Along with being depressed and having up and downs with anxiety, I decided to put that energy into songwriting and recording. I had a great friend along the way that took his time out to record me and help find me an engineer to mix and master my music. I just told myself to be original and to find a consistent pocket that truly fit me. That brought my first single I released called “OMW,” which means a lot to me because I felt like I was telling the world that I was on to something, but they just didn’t know it yet. Music has given me the true expression that I was searching for and I haven’t stopped since. So much love was shown from my first single “OMW” on social media. It really opened my eyes, and I started to believe more and more. I’m not in the position where I want to be yet, but the progress I’ve made so far is a blessing and can say that I have fans and supporters that truly follow my music. Different messages from people all over the world inspire me to continue my artistry, and I’m very thankful for that. I will continue to keep the ball rolling.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Things have not been easy on my end but I never expected it to be. It can be a challenge just trying to balance everyday life tasks while still trying to find the time to search for beats, write songs, and record. I also try to keep my Instagram page active because it’s probably the biggest platform for most artist at the moment. I’m in the process of trying to manage my time much better than I have in the past to make it easier on myself.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
As I continue my artistry. I would like to have artist of my own one day in the industry. My record label is called Gre8t Vibes Records. You can find it on my current music releases. My goal is to be able to have a hand in the industry where I can sign artists and give them a platform and exposure, which is some of the hardest things to do as an unsigned artist today.
What were you like growing up?
Coming up in my younger days, I feel like I was cool, but I was finding myself as well which I can say is normal for most teens. I grew up as time went on so thank God for growth & maturity . I was kind of known around my small town for the most part, mainly cause of me playing sports. I can say that I was a music head coming up as a teenager listening to many artist from the genres of Hip Hop, R&B, and Neo-Soul which I credit my brother for introducing me to these different sounds at a really early age. My brother put me on classic music coming up from OutKast, Goodie Mob. the Classic tracks of Hip Hop and R&B in its Golden age, all the classics. I also liked and listened to the sounds Soul, Funk, pop, and even country. Anything that can bring a vibe basically which I reference that often in my music. I sang a lot to myself when no one would be at home and I was able to feel and hear that I could sing because I was able to get an idea of my voice range. My main focus was baseball coming up while I was a teenager. I was a pretty solid baseball player in high school, earning 1st all state honors and went to play in college. Music was always apart of me, but I didn’t pursue it until much later. I’m really glad that I did..
My album “Mixed Feelings” I released in October 2019 is currently out now on all music streaming platforms following behind my first project EP “Long Lost Gift.” My latest project “Save A Spot” was released April 14 and is out now on all music platforms. The video will be dedicated to Covid-19 victims and my late grandmother. It will be released really soon.
