Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Chambers.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cameron. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a graphic design student at Georgia Southern University. I started learning graphic design and what it is in high school at Savannah Arts Academy. There I studied visual arts. I’ve always been interested in art and its various displays since I was a child. It may be partially due to my mother who is now an art teacher over at Stone Mountain High School. I’ve always been pushed to strive toward what drives me and stirs a passion. For me that is art and design. So back in high school we had to take a graphic design course and from there decided to follow the concentration until now.
Along the way, I have also picked up on studying motion design and videography/photography outside of graphic design at the university I am currently enrolled and also Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, CA. When I started college, I was having a hard time finding a job to allow me to stay enrolled in school so I decided to manifest some of what I learned and do some freelance designing for other students who have entrepreneurial dreams making logos, business cards, etc. Around the same time, I received a part-time position from the university designing on the marketing team at the recreation and activity center, Campus Recreation and Intramurals. I have been doing this since freshman year progressively learning all I can to add to my slate, pulling inspiration from the environment and those around me to continue growing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One big obstacle through my experience has always been sorting out my finances. We have to work from what we are given. I come from a single-parent household where my mother strives to make sure my three other siblings (a brother and two sisters) and I are getting everything we need. Being the oldest, for her, getting me through at least my first year in college was important. Within that first year, I was really able to focus on school and finding a job that would allow me to stay in school.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I do freelance work. For now, that includes students at Georgia Southern and friends of friends. Typically I make logo packages and work on some brand identity. I’ve made t-shirt designs, sticker designs, posters/flyers, business cards, resumes, and recently photoshoots.
If I was known for something it’d be ‘quality’. I try to ensure what I’m produce for anyone including myself is better than the best it could be. The people around me know that I produce top tier work. I’m proud to have built a reputation such as that for myself even though some days it may not feel like it. I just strive to make the next day better than the last. Always learn from what I’ve done in the past to move forward. If I achieve these things, then I know I’m moving in the right direction.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
So far, my proudest moment is to have begun making a name for myself. After this last semester, it will have been graduating and completing my senior portfolio and exhibition.
